Iconic Brock cars up for grabs

SOME OF the most significant cars in Australian motorsport history are officially up for grabs, with car collector Peter Champion deciding to put his huge collection of Peter Brock racecars on the market following a string of health issues.

Australian Muscle Car Magazine Editor Luke West says it’s the “biggest and most significant sale in Australian motor racing history” and, when you look at the collection – which features a range of Bathurst-winning Commodores, Toranas and others – it’s hard to disagree.

Amongst the metal are the first and last Holdens that ‘Peter Perfect’ ever raced at Mount Panorama.

“Champion’s ‘Brock Collection’ comprises some 40 vehicles including the Austin A30, Malboro HDT Toranas and Commodores, Targa rally vehicles and now the infamous, fully-restored Daytona Coupe in which Peter Brock lost his life,” read the announcement.

“The collection closed to the public some 24 months ago and after suffering serious health issues last year, the owner has reached the difficult decision to part with the collection.

“Expressions of interest are being sought for the collection, preferably to be sold as a whole or perhaps individually.”

Champion acknowledged it was an extremely hard decision to reach after so many years.

“The time has come for the collection to move on,” he said. “It has given me and my team many moments of enjoyment and pleasure sharing this with the general public over the years, but the time has come for us to move on.”

The cars are currently housed at Yeppoon, near Rockhampton in Queensland.

After all ties were cut from Holden, Brock became involved in the importation and even the modification of the Lada Samara. A cheap Soviet built hatchback a world away from the high performance V8 powered Commodores he was famous for.

The Porsche designed engine helped the Lada down the quarter mile at 19.2 seconds. Brock himself devised a few subtle suspension tweaks to improve the cars low speed ride

That's a real pity they are being sold, perhaps being separated. I didn't realise the collection was so comprehensive, it would have been a hard decision for PC. If I was him I would be keeping say 3 of the favourites for the private garage, and selling the rest, including that Lada .

So lets hope they all stay together in either that specially built building or somewhere more accessible for the public to see them.

My uncle is related through marriage to one of Peter's brothers and as a kid we went and saw this collection out in a shed near Blackwater in Queensland years ago.
He had an off-road racing ute that was pretty impressive that he raced with Brocky at some stage as well that doesn't seem to be in the collection.

His brother has a collection that would appeal a lot more to people on this forum.

Some say that the original is in the Bathurst museum.

That could be true, a lot (not all) of the cars are replicas.

PC also has a rather large vintage tractor collection.

A bit of trivia. The HDT transporter is Lowndsies old one.

Also the Daytona Coupe is not mentioned in the list above.

The original IS in the museum at Bathurst. This is possibly the 25 car that went to England and was raced by John Cleland. I say possibly because it was extensively damaged in England and many body panels including the entire front end which was changed at least twice. If I had the coin, I'd buy it and change it back to 25 at least then it would end the charade.

Holden could get the government to buy the collection for them , build a museum for them and put public servants in there to run it for them, and then heavily advertise how good Holden is for Australia!

An interesting read, All of Peter Brock's most famous Australian race cars are going to be sold, the owner is seeking expressions of interest, especially for the car that peter brock lost his life in, which has been restored.

I know the guy says he has "health issues", but, to be blunt, they had no idea about running what was supposed to be a "motor museum" and a tribute to a well-loved Australian character.
I went there a few times, to try and see the collection, when it was open. Twice it was closed (on a saturday afternoon when people are all out and about looking for things to do), the next time it had a private function going on, and I was told when I rang that "you have to make an appointment to come see it".

Many people in the area here complained bitterly that it wasn't just open to the public, to come and go as you saw fit, paying an admission price like any other motoring museum...they seemed to want to keep it as a "private collection" that they would let a few select viewers in now and then to see.
No wonder it went bust...

It would be nice to think they'd all end up in a collection where the general public can get in and see them whenever they wish, like a real museum.

Too often classic cars like this vanish into private collections with owners who think that owning such cars bestows some sort of superstar status on them as a person and they then smugly sit back and pick and choose who the privelaged few are who are allowed in to see them...

I even notice Bowdens only has a "once a year open day" for "enthusiasts to come and see our cars". I'd heard this before but didn't believe it.
For fox sake...LET THE PUBLIC IN. People need to see these cars, not just read about them in books and wonder wistfully what they look like in real life. It's simply criminal to hide them away like that...

Australia used to have several nice motor museums (proper museums where you could just walk in off the street any old time...) but sadly theyt've mostly been sold off and split up.

Correct - 05 is in the Bathurst museum.
Champion's 05 is actually car 25.

while it doesn't bother me either way, because i have no desire to see them
i think the cost of having a museum open to the public would be astronomical. it would always have to be in tip top condition. they could not work on a car in the showroom. the public liability insurance would be huge for 365 days as opposed to a handful of days
it might be possible but i would think the costs would be huge

and while some may not agree (and that is their prerogative) but whoever owns the car gets to choose what happens with them
if i had a whole lot of desirable cars sitting around, i doubt i would want joe public coming in and standing near them and putting their grubby finger prints on them

I think there's a huge difference between a museum which is generally public owned and in the case of Champion's and Bowden's which are privately held.
