G'day all.
Bought my first Euro Ford last week being an MA TDCi Mondeo and I got 2 remote keys with the car. One didnt work and I replaced the battery and it still didnt work so I ordered a new remote from the local Ford dealer ($110.00) which I picked up today. I realised that the car had probably forgotten the non working remote so I went hunting for info on how to program them again after trying the trusty demist switch flick id used with my EB/EF and NF over the years with no luck. So I called a mate who was a TA with Ford and he told me how. Stick the ignition key in and around until the dash lights up as if you were going to start the car and turn from that position (Ignition) to position 0 and back four times within three seconds. So Ign on to off 4 times in 3 seconds, its easily achievable The key should now be in the "Off" pozzy. (I think, if it doesnt work try it ending in the on position) The locking control system is now in "learn mode" for the next 20 seconds and you need to now push a button on the remotes you want the car to learn. As I had 3 including the one in the ignition I pushed the lock button on the key in the ign and got a chime, I then pushed the boot button on the new remote and the lock button on the old remote with the new battery and got a chime each time. I then removed the key in the ign and tested the remotes which all worked for lock unlock, dead lock and boot open (2 pushes on the boot button) The result? 3 fully functional Key remotes. This MAY not be 100% as I was on the phone when i was doing this and did write it down but im pretty sure that was all there was to it. BTW if you dont press a button on a remote when it is in learn mode it will "Unlearn" that remote so make sure you have them all with you for the learning. Cheers, Tony

I bought a new remote (Minus key) from my local FoMoCo dealer and went through this with the 2 original and 1 new units after replacing the batteries on the older units and they all work fine.
Just a tip with the button style batteries, IF you handle them incorrectly they will discharge fairly quickly. I usually use Nitrile gloves as I have had the same issue in the past where a replaced battery was a flat as the old one and i have also bought cheapy batteries of unknown age and found them to be dead as a dodo so now I buy them from camera shops or Chemists and I only buy brand name because I figured it wasnt worth the added hassle.

And THIS pretty much mirrors my experience with the chimes.
Remote Transmitter Programming (410040) 1. Note: A maximum of four keyless entry remote transmitters can be programmed to the generic electronic module (GEM). Programming must be done at the same time for all the transmitters. Note: To enter programming mode, first make sure that the vehicle battery is fully charged and the anti-theft system is not armed or triggered (if equipped). Close all doors and fasten the safety belts to make sure conflicting chimes do not sound during programming. 2. Turn the ignition switch from position I to position II at least four times in six seconds. 3. Turn the ignition switch to position I. 4. The GEM is now in the learning mode. 5. Press and hold one of the buttons on the remote transmitter until a chime sounds. This indicates a new transmitter code has been successfully received. 6. After each successful programming, another 10 second learning mode is automatically entered, up to a maximum of four times. 7. To program additional transmitters, repeat step 5. 8. The system will leave the learning mode after the ignition switch is turned to position III, or if no new transmitter is programmed during the 10 seconds, or if four remote transmitters have been programmed. 9. Note: An incorrect programming procedure does not affect the stored codes. After successful programming, only the new programmed transmitters will be accepted. 10. Test all the programmed transmitters, by activating and deactivating the locking/unlocking functions.

I cocked up on the key positioning, read the 2 I posted above taken from a google search. Obviously my brain wasn't working too well that day. It is worth keeping in mind though that there may be anomalies around the build dates especially with very early production numbers. I have one of the first EB Series II Fairmonts Ghia's and when I went to buy remotes everyone swore it would have Smartlock because it was an SII. So after trying to program the remote out front of the dealer and failing miserably I got the dealer to try and after 40 mins they couldn't get it to learn either. 2 days later I went looking for the Smartlock module to see if it was ok and it didnt have one....................... Never had one either lol Tony

Great to have all the above information guys, thanks for the info!
When I changed the battery's (3V CR 2032) I referred to page 32 (keys and remote controls) of the owner's manual. It has all the information that you require; PROGRAMMING THE REMOTE CONTROL You can programme a maximum of eight remote controls to use with your vehicle (including any supplied with your vehicle) Programming a new remote control 1. Insert the key in the ingnition. 2. Cycle the key from position O to ll and then back to O four times within six seconds. 3. Leave the key in position O and press any button on the remote control within 10secs. You will receive confirmation via a chime or LED that programming has been successful. Note: Further remote controls may be programmed at this stage. 4. Press any button on each additional remote control within 10 sec of each other.
