Default escort gearbox

ok I need some help. I recently bought a mint 1300 mk1 escort which I've started stripping back to bare metal. the problem started when I pulled out the gearbox. I have no idea what it is. it's definelty not a normal 1300 fourspeed box as it seems way bigger and stronger. it's not an RS2000 gearbox either as I have one and it is nothing simliar. it does use an RS prop shaft though but it has different ratios. the part number stamped on it is 71wg7006ac and it has "masport" stamped just below the part number

Welcome to FordForums.com.au 74escort. Best if you become a member at the link below. Lots of help available on MK1/MK2 Escorts there. Love the old Eskies myself. What do you plan on doing to the MK1? Rebuild back to standard spec's or other?

I'm not rebuilding her to be a mexico or an RS or anything like that. I'm just gonna get a decent suspension and brake set up. fresh paint job and original interior. 2 liter pinto and maybe a five speed type 9 box. unless of course the mystery gearbox I have already proves to be something more interesting

Sounds like the original gearbox ... or at least the manufacturing date is at the same time period. You say it has different ratios but how do you know what the ratios are? If you can give me the ratios I'll try to suss it out further.

1st 3.6
2nd 2.1
3rd 1.4
4th direct drive
also it has a bolt on bellhousing unlike the normal type 2 gearbox used in most escorts which has an integral bellhousing.

Well those ratios rule out it being either a Quaife or a Mexico .... the build number on the box looks very "Ford-like" and the first digits represent the build year which would be in this case 1971. I'd take a guess and say it's the three rail wide ratio box fitted to the RS1600s ... 3.65 first gear. It was only the 1300cc gearbox that use an integral bell housing - all others had two-piece.

I'm from Ireland so 1100 and 1300 escorts are the normal for us back home so type 2 boxes litter the country. have you any idea what the masport stamp could be about?

According to my Parts Manual that part number is for the Main Case of a Jan 1973 onwards 1300 Escort or RS2000 box.

So I would say that it is the standard 1300 box.

Oh 3 Rail Part number is 2821E 7006 G so its definatly not one of those

BUT the number he has given is the production build number NOT the part number - there is quite a difference and they are never the same because one is used by Ford to identify when a part was designed and put into production and the other is for after sales servicing as you know. The ONLY part of the number that will be the same is the group number in this case 7006 which simply identifies it as a "gearbox".

I'm still baffling over the masport stamp as I have never seen that ... not that I've seen many older smaller Ford gearboxes or have taken that much notice anyway ... in those days I was all into V8s.

The number he has given is definetly the part number for the main case, which appears in my Parts Manual as a January 1973 onwards 1300 Case Assembly all other boxes listed have different part numbers in this area. In my RS parts manual the same number is listed for the RS2000 box's case assembly.

It is a post Jan 73 1300 or RS2000 type box.. which one its impossible to tell from that number only.

Going by what you say if i needed a certain part that there were a number of different options there is no way to identify it from the number stamped on it because the Spare Parts numbers are different? LOL makes a lot of sense

Hi 74 escort
Sounds to me you gota std box in it.There are alot of strange bits in Aussie escorts that we never seen in standard cars in europe,eg MK1 have timkin & baby salsbury axles,MK2 RS with 4doors and tin sumps,I had a MK1 escort with seperate bell housing box as fitted to MK3 cortina, all escort shells had extra strut top plates fitted.6 cylinder MK4&5 cortina,MK2 8 cylinder granada saloon, ute &van.
It seams Ford are not alone in this, Morris marinea with 6 cylinders, mini 1100 engine, vauxhall viva fast back with 6 cylinders(not firenza or magnum shape).

The MASPORT name is used in New Zealand,I think. If I am correct, they were heavily involved in rallying small Fords in the 60's,70's and 80's and maybe this is the connection.-Fang.

Thought I would add the 2 cents here in case anyone can’t make connections

6 cylinder MK4&5 cortina, Aussie name – TC and TD model

MK2 8 cylinder granada saloon, ute &van. Incorrect, the XD Falcons have nothing to do with the Granada despite looking similar

mini 1100 engine, This was originally known as the Mini K (for kangaroo), also Aust Minis had wind-up windows before the UK, and in 1971 or 1972 changed across the board to the square Leyland nose

vauxhall viva fast back with 6 cylinders(not firenza or magnum shape). aka Holden Torana

masport were i think gear box builders,,they rebuilt boxes to their own standards.
i don't think they exist anymore as the name is now well known for mowers and accessaries...

Correct also.

What you have got there 74escort is a genuine Ford Escort Masport alloy bellhousing. Not too many around these days. I can help you solve your problem. I'll swap you a genuine low Km's 4 speed for your problem gearbox. Problem solved. :
