Hi everyone , I'm currently looking to buy a xr8 prob spending around 10-12000 therefore around 05 - 06 not to bothered on auto or manual .. Always gad manuals but kinda over traffic , so basically I'm open to all info on what to look out for ie engine faults, diff ,ect as the car will prob have from 140-180000 Km's on it .
Is it a bad idea all together buying one of these because it will cost me an arm and a leg to fix soon and probe to engine bearings going ect and transmission ? I looked at a 2006 bf xr8 6 speed auto today , it seems ok but I just kinda noticed a noise at top of engine like a chain / grind like eerrrreeerrrr kinda like a turbo diesel at idle haha is that normal ? The 2005 I seen 10 mins before didn't seem to have that noise but I will have to see . Thanks for anyone who can shine some light on my queries |

The noise you heard at the top will be related to the timeing chain guides. They just need replacing, other wise the car might be AOK.

Well I've just bought a manual 05 xr8 ute for $14000 with under 90000km its only needed some minor stuff, like the tailshaft centre bearing and a set of coils and plugs, all easy stuff and not a problem since. Runs great.. Not bad on fuel either.

Pay a little extra and get one with low km and well cared for. You might save a buck now but likely cost you two tomorrow.
