Default D-Day, 6th of June

Today is the 6th of June and 69 years ago today allied
troops landed in France to put an end to the war that
had been going on since 1939. Lest We Forget.

My Mums Dad was there on D Day. British, Irish Guard, iow, a 20 odd year old, drilled and pressed and hammered into something that resembles a man that can kill another man.
Sad to say, it had to be done. The enemy he was up against had proven themselves to be quite capable of dishing out savage retributions to those who oppose, and even those who just happened to be born a Jew (= bad move embryo).
Grandad suffered battle fatigue. One thing the enemy done well was, using mortars and machine gun, pin down the troops by accurate, measured, crossfire. To the left and to the right, his mates (also 20 yo lads) were being blown apart.
Nanna, (I'm stepping back to when I was 4 and 5), always put the fear of Grandad into me. That was because he was a shift worker, and when we were over to visit, we had to keep quiet, or this monster would emerge and wreak havoc - I think I was pretty quiet.
But I remember one morning, the mysterious Grandad was there, having a shave. First he revealed to me and my older brother, the 9 volt battery from his electric shaver, dabbed on the tongue. Then he showed us his pen knife (to me = wow).
Somehow, he left that knife in the bathroom. Of course, I tried to immediately withdraw the blade, cutting my thumb in the process. Of course I was crying, but it was more my fear of Grandad that worried me, than the blood. It was his reaction that blew me apart. He picked me up, he was so worried and obviously sorry that he left the knife where I could get it.
I fell in Love with my Grandad that day, and obviously, though the man has passed away, will I love him always.
I'm glad as a teenager, I was able to catch up with this remarkable gentleman.
Godbless,
RIP
Peter Doran

Just finished reading "Tobruk" by Peter Fitzsimons today.

Great book, great courage, great ANZACS.

I am deeply appreciative of all that allied soliders have done for us, during that seige and defence, on D-Day, before and beyond.

As a 1st generation Australian, am deeply proud to be an Aussie and am so bloody glad that my parents came here in 1962.

Lest we forget.

Madaya,

Great words, it was a sad time for mankind but I agree it had done.

Just one point, Judaism is a religion not a race.

Cheers

I just stated the fact, just ask anyone who was in it.
I acknowledge who served, but not the yobbos of today that have made it all in vane, especially the ones who blindly idolise things like this.
If one only looks to the attack just for the attack sake and not the fundamentals foundations of why they were doing as such.
Wake up Australia.
Not just full of ego's and just blind boasting.

I don't think anyone was blindly idolising, being egotistical or boasting, just remembering and asking us to remember what people fought for. War neurosis, PTSD, Shell Shock or whatever the new term is, is not an easy thing. Every veteran suffers some form some severe, some so lighlty it is not noticable to most.

The yobbos of today could quite easily be the veteran of tomorrow if the circumstances prevail as they did in previous years.

D Day, the Normandy Landings had to happen. There were no politics or ego here. Sure, the enemy was a diverse group, I believe there where a large contingent of Romanians at Omaha (Saving Private Ryan), but the focus of the event was to turn the tide against Nazism, which had proven itself to be a force of, for want of a better word, evil. My Grandad, a professional soldier, I'm sure had no doubt, that what he was doing was necessary, propaganda and military orders aside. Hitler had to be stopped.

Still, we are a forum and I feel that as long as things are kept civil, are backed up by facts and an argument doesn't become a tit for tat campaign, then folk should be allowed to offer opinions and argument.

Closing an argument because someone's opinion differs is contrary to the spirit of D Day. Only if the person aligns themselves with the ideals of the defeated enemy, should the moderators take action.

Just my thoughts.

What am i on about ?
Good grief man the whole war was in vane, the Nazis ( socialism ) have won.
We won the war, but we have lost the battle.
Can't you see it, socialism and Political correctness is our new god.
Hitler and Starlin created the Political Correct rubbish and if you were not PC you were an enemy of the state.
And because of the love, no worship! of PC today, i can not go into detail or express my freedom of speech.
I know what the thread is about, but just giving a comment on the situation of it.. is that to much, to give a comment. or is that to much to give to the people who gave their lives

we've had members of our family in most conflict's......including D Day.

very proud to be able to say this, the nation called, young men answered.

we now enjoy living in peace simply because good men would not stand idly by.

thus it shall always be.......well done Madaya......I wasn't going to comment as it can be taken over by those who seek to rewrite history.

we shall remember them.......as far as myself and my family are concerned they are remembered and missed every time there is a family gathering.

I am just putting it out their.

you have a choice to remember or not.....yes that is democracy in action.

what is needed to attain and maintain that democracy, and your free speech, is that which we choose to remember.

if our best and bravest had stayed home you may very well be shot for expressing your opinion........

we owe so much to so many that we should never forget! ..lest it be repeated.

"just saying.... Bro!"...........
