What about building come model planes, you know those plastic kits from a toy store that you paint, glue together and then whack the decals on?
Most young boys I know are in to aircraft in some shape, form or fashion, even if only for a short while. If that keeps him interested, you could always then progress to doing RC planes. This way your initial outlay is not too great and he gets to build up his skill levels as you progress. Of course, if planes are of no interest to him, you could always find some plastic models of a subject he is in to (characters, cars, boats, helicopters, etc) Hope that helps Craig H
