Hello everyone, my names Ben and I'm from the uk traveling this great country of yours in my lovely el falcon that has some issues.
Basically the auto box is slipping, it was low on oil so we topped it up but it still slips, would this be box or torque converter? We're still driving it and have been for the last thousand k's. Also anyone in Brisbane that would let us use there drive way to change the box if we need to? Have tools and knoledge! Thanks in advance. Ben |

Ben,
Ask the auto questions in here http://fordforums.com.au/forumdisplay.php?f=64 These guys may be able to help you with diagnostics. If you need to swap and are stuck for a place let me know and I'll try to clear some room in my shed. I know sfa about cars with electronic stuff on them though.

If your EL has done over 250,000 then the box is saying goodbye.
The four speeds only last between 200k - 300k. A reco one will cost around $2k. |

Is it slipping a fair bit, or just a bit of flaring at gear changes? All gears or just a couple? Does the EF have econ/sports mode switch by the shifter like the EL does? If so, how does it go running the auto in sports mode?

Hi people thanks for the input so far. It slips in all gears and quite a lot, it's been well serviced but we ran it low for a couple of hundred k's and now it slips even tho we've topped it up. It has econ button by the shifter. If you are really gentle with the throttle it's fine but when booting it it bangs into gear....

If it has an external cooler check it. My mum's old EL (which did 470,000km) had the same problem, she drove it like that for years as no mechanic could diagnose it, one day she took it in as it was bad and it was finally sent to a trans specialist who said that the cooler was blocked and the trans was no longer salvagable. Is it ok when cold?

I've seen well maintained ones do 400K but most people think they can save a few dollars doing their own "service". a proper transmission service entails more than oil and filter.

Yes, they can get over300k if "well maintained", trouble is 90% of them aren't and so average around 250k.
