Does your disk utility show any unformatted space?
There is also a recovery partition that you will need to account for.

Under your control panel somewhere. Sorry, I don't use Windows so am not sure how you can navigate there.

Try going into control panel. Then to device manager and find the model of your HDD (google it).
This should at least tell you what the size is.

While your their you can go into the properties of the HDD and populate your drive in the volume tab.

But it sounds as if you got a 250gb HDD.

Looks like you may have gotten the 320gb version. We sell these at work and ours is 320GB. Do you mind me asking the price you paid?

Also have to remember that they're advertised as a 320gb when in reality it's closer to 310 as they're advertised as if 1GB is 1000MB when it's 1024MB to a GB.

The other thing to do is flip the laptop upside down as often the specs are written on there or at the very least the model number meaning you can google it to see which version you have or just look on the side of the box it came in.

I can understand having an untouchable partition on a store bought PC but having a 180 gb partition solely for your OS and backup seems a little to high.

This doesn't make any sense. I think you may be confusing partitions with actual physical hard drives.

You only have one hard drive, which you've confirmed to be 320 GB and it probably has 3 partitions (OS, DATA and a hidden recovery partition).

Open up Disk Management and see what it shows there. You need a drive letter assigned to a partition to see it in My Computer.

It seems ASUS still do the C: and D: split. My First laptop was an ASUS bought from 2004 and it had this feature. As well as a factory 2yr warranty. Still works too!

Not a bad thing actually. You can totally reset your machine to factory specs while booting by pressing one of the F keys and it won't touch the D: at all.

Saved me in China when my comp died after a very nasty virus got in and caused a lot of damage.

Regarding the partitions.... wow Win 8 must take up a lot of space! Having said that, if the hidden partition only contains the operating system it should be equal to or less than what you have on C: at the moment seeing as the computer is new.

The C: has a lot of free space, you would assume that was for any new software that needs to be installed?

Doesn't leave much 'free' space in the D:!

I think the 320G is TOTAL space. Inclusive of the hidden partition, the C: and the D:

My ASUS was advertised with a '60G drive' and that was inclusive of all 3 partitions.

A 320 GB hard drive will only show 298 GB of usable space (for reasons I couldn't be bothered explaining).

The OP's C: partition is 119 GB and D: partition is 157 GB

298 GB - 119 GB - 157 GB = 22 GB

That 22 GB is about the size I would expect for a hidden Win 8 recovery partition (fwiw, my Dell Win 7 recovery partition is about 16 GB).

So the partitions seem consistent with a 320 GB drive and the OP has googled the drive model and confirmed it is 320 GB.

It seems pretty clear to me that the OP didn't get what was advertised...

This is all you need to do. it will show all partitions, so you can see exactly how your drive is split up.
