Just got a new car, upgraded from an old XF Wagon with heaps of features, but I'm a little disappointed in my new ride.
Got the dealer to give me a full tank of fuel when I picked the car up, I got just over 300km's out of the tank, town driving with a little bit of highway. Is it likely my MAP sensor is buggered? Does the ECU give a code I can test for if this is the case? How much is a new MAP sensor? Keep in mind I've been driving fairly sedately, compared to how I drove the XF, I've been driving like a grandma who can only just reach the pedals. Its the 4.0 6, Auto. |

mate my AU pulls no codes, new injectors, reset computer you name it I've tried everything but can't get around the factory rich when cold setting in the ECU. Around town (be it I do short trips) i get 300'ish out of a tank. THe same car did 715 kays with still 25 DTE on the highway to Rockhampton with 4 adults loaded up??
So nearly over double :(

hey,
i had the same trouble after finishing a dev 3-HL JMM kit on my AU. it was running real rich. it could possibly be the MAP sensor but i would put a bet on that it is the pressure sensor. it is a common problem for the AU. you can get is check at nearly any mechanic. the sensor is a silver cylinder near the fire wall. and to replace the MAP sensor is a few hundred. good luck luke |

check oxy sensor ... i had similar effects once when i forgot to hook up oxy sensor
car didnt enter closed loop in the fuel map and stayed in the warm up area of it, which is considerly richer than the close loop area, hence using lotsa fuel

It could also have been a short fill. You can leave the ignition on and fill the tank until the needle hits F, but it's not actually full. I would reserve judgement on the number of kms you get until you fill it yourself and then drive it and see how you go. I get around 420 to 480 on mine (city) and over 700 on highway cycle.

Well I'm guessing it was a full fill, because it stayed on the full mark for quite a while while driving.

now on the fairmonts, you hold the reset button and the computer resets or something, and my fuel consuption is now around low 14's high 13's and i drive fairly briskly most of the time. i get about 440 kays from a tank, highway and city driving. i wouldnt know how to do this on a forte. take it back to the dealer and get it them to reset the computer? i was going to say lighten your right foot. but you have. so i dunno.

When full ... the gauge should sit above the full line for a while ... for about 150-200km
Could be a number of things ... maybe a vacuum leak somewhere as well ... could be oxygen sensor (if fouled it won't read properly and run rich) ... could be MAP as well. Get a mechanic to check it out though ... they know what to look for.

Fault codes might cause the ECU go into LHM, clear those codes throught either a snap on scanner or force reset (DC battery for at least 20min).
after that trouble shoot it, get urself a volt meter, identify the signal wires on oxy and map sensor and identify the voltage changes with running engine ... if volt readings fall within acceptable levels or as specified in manual, they can be assumed as working and i would move onto tracing back a vac leak. Start with the vac tree near the manifold and work your way into the cabin. alternative can be you use positive pressure from a compressor and a watter bottel and look for bubbles ... (note: i am not a big fan of last idea)

But doesn't limp home mode mean loss of power too? Cause its certainly got lots of power.
Oh btw, does EEC-IV (XF EFI) have LHM? |

I can get 490km out of a tank, all city driving with about 3 minutes of 80-100km/hr driving thrown in each morning.

My neighbours AU III had a bad fuel pressure regulator which had him chewing through juice (umong other symptoms).....
No-one thus far has mentioned tyre pressures. At the risk of starting a bun fight and going off topic I set mine at mid to high 30's. What are your set at? No-one else has mentioned a dirty/blocked air filter, roof racks, dirty injectors. Call me a tossa but all of these things are worth a few % |

Well, it's coming up real close to the 80k service, so I'll just see how it goes and maybe mention it to the service people. I really didn't want to start replacing things, I was sick of doing that on the old XF.

If you can get it to a Ford dealer, get them to run their diagnostics on it as it will pinpoint or at least get you in the right direction. Had a similar problem with my ute - I6 manual, using 18-19l/100km did it for the duration of one tank of petrol then settled back down to 10l/100km. I replaced the fuel filter a few tanks later and I've had no problems in the last three months with economy :

Yeh, sort of seems like it may have settle a little anyway, so I'll just let them know at the service, there're the local Ford dealer, so I'll see how I go.
