I'm using the ED manifold because I will be having an intercooler installed. I guess there's a bit of stuffing around either way.
I forgot to mention that I bought a new EF radiator and have thermofans which will be going on. That addresses the lack of clutch fan/different water pump outlet on the AU. |

AU and EF have 104 pins (or something around that) and the EA-ED and EL have 60 pins.

The other problem with using the shift light circuit is, it pings as well. Yes, EF's were coil packs then in EL they went back to the dizzy setup, so an EL ECU will plug straight into your existing loom, and it will allow the BBM and thermofans to function as per normal.
With regards to Trouty's setup I think you'll find if you went the turbo route, the ED manifold allows you to have simpler and shorter cooler piping.

I never had a pinging problem with my car, just lost rwkw on the dyno as it ran rich in the top end, there a few wires that need to be changed, but yet is will plug straight in as NED said.
yes the ED manifold has slightly larger intake runners then the EA (but it is also slightly shorter in height) and is better suited for easy turbo cooler piping.
