Aptitude test (Energex)

Hey guys, ive scored myself a interview with energex and i guess this is the first step

What am i in for, this is for a apprenticeship for the Jan 2011 Intake...

I used to work in that industry.
Assuming you are looking at electrical fitter mechanic.

Learn a bit about electricity particularly how and where it is generated, how it is distributed, the voltages of the lines, what Energex does and where it does it (as opposed to Ergon).

Maths is another one, E=IR, I2R rules, power factor, AC & DC etc.

when i started with energyAustralia i had to sit an entry exam - maths, trigonometry, etc with no calculator.

then i had an interview - just general questions about electricity, what voltages at the powerpoint, etc, and a quick skill test to see if you could use a screw driver and also identify wire colours, and common sense questions to see if i was suited to a 'trade' field.

then it was medical time and after that i was in..


this was to get in as a lineworker apprentice.

I'll add a half-useful post just by saying that I and most people here in AFF wish you the best in securing an apprenticeship with Energex.

The aptitude test will just test you on different area's. Its pretty much like an IQ test. I've done a few of them and some are more difficult then others. It normally tests you on your English, maths, mechanical aptitude, problem solving and patterns.

As above, but they also sometimes bring out some cables, switches, fuses etc. and ask you to identify and explain how they work. A friend and his brother work for Energex and went through the apprenticship program. This mate also set the boot of his skyline on fire because he didn't wire an amp up properly, so I assume its not that difficult.

Good luck on the test mate, i've done some aptitude tests for a few government organisations and they vary great. The ones i was doing were more pattern recognition and problem solving.

aight did the test today, i can say its not somethign you can really study for

There were no bringing out cables blah blah blah it was just a multi choice test, didnt exactly have enough time to finish each section (3 of) so that may kick me in the butt :(

haha so true, but second year apprentice wages will pay better then "tucking crocs into bed"

maybe you could teach me to drive trucks mate haha

My bad must be during the interview stage they test your knowledge a bit more. Good luck mate, nothing like getting paid double time evrytime it rains.

Good luck with getting an interview mate. What sort of apprenticeship you trying to get. I finished a Lineworker's apprenticeship two years ago.

Thats the thing with that place, they think the staff are privileged to have a job there so they pay them a pittance.

An old Telstra trick used during their suitability selection process is to walk you around showing you this and that and babbling on about a whole bunch of seemingly irrelevant stuff. They'd sit you down and then ask you specific questions about the guided tour...

not sure how energex works.

i did the aptitude test for NSW Railways a few years ago and it involved maths, english, and other things.. it went for hours and was split up into each subject and timed.. ie maths for an hour, enlish for an hour, etc.. i think i was offered a job, but can't remember as it was ages ago and i didn't take it

i also did the test for Energy australia (for a lineworker position) and from memory it was maths based, trigonometry, algebra (i think), etc. i must have 'passed' it because i have been there since 2004.

i'm not sure if there is a pass mark as such or if they just know how many people they need and take the top people to fill the number of spots.

if you go well enough at the test you get an interview. the interview went for an hour or more and was to gauge your electrical knowledge and experiences (life and work). i don't know how old you are, but in my year of the apprenticeship we had guys straight out of school through to 40 year old guys looking for a change, and all ages in between.

to give you an idea of numbers there were 25 people in my year (just in linework) and the last few years there have been nearly 50 each year. i don't know if energex is hiring in the same numbers.

There is not a certain amount of questions in an aptitude test you have to get right, it is also about how many you attempt, and how many you get right.

Think if this was for a lineworker. Do you want 100% accuracy, or 100 attempted jobs?

Down here in Vic, I work for SP AusNet as an Electrical Tester Trainee, and our aptitude tests take both accuracy and attempts into account. But the interview is where you shine. As flappist said, get as much info about the company and the job as possible, it all helps.

I know, I know. Old post but I'm going for this testing early next month and I'd like a heads up on what type of questions they ask...
