Although the timeline is different, it's almost a carbon copy of what happened with Ford. Once the sales numbers start sliding for the hero model, the beloved Commodore, it's bye bye. Sad that as a country we are blinded by what we are fed to believe by Governments and the media. If only we had more parochial aspirational Aussies who felt Australian made was pretty damn good indeed and there is no need to buy imported. Can't wait to see what happens when there is no car manufacturing in the coming years and we are then made to pay whatever importers ask us to pay. Will serve us all right especially when the expected dip in Aussie dollar occurs. Advance Australia Fair....yeh right.

Sounds similar to what Ford has been going through. Presidents have changed from Tom Gorman to Bill Osborne to an Australian guy to Bob Graziano. It's one of the tell tale signs of a struggling company.

I can see this thread going on until he's gone. Lots of opinions and forecasts into the future of our beloved Australian Holden. MD's move is clearly a career move. It can be seen as bad timing. Perhaps he or GM could have waited untl a government deal had been announced, or perhaps the governmant has already stated it's position to GM?
Perhaps there is nothing in it. Maybe GM has a better person to fill his shoes. We'll see.

HaHa, hardly - funny how some distort a simple story.

If what the implies by some here suggest are true, Holden should've closed its operations 4 times over by now after Peter Hanenberger's retirement.

Since then, over the course of the last decade, Denny Mooney, Chris Gubbey, Mark Reuss, Alan Batey, and Mike Deveraux have all had the top job of solidifying Holden's position as a car maker, and then using that as a benchmark / stepping stone for promotion to larger responsibilities within the GM world.
A very educated man who's prior posting was Managing Director of GM Middle East Operations based in Dubai, it was only fitting for him to have a direct insight and lead the company that had such strong ties as an exporter.

The fact is, in the GM world of late, Ceo's are on rotating posts to understand all aspects/operations of the GM world meaning its highly unlikely any future ceo will spend more than 4yrs, and that philosophy has also spread to the shop floor, creating a diverse workforce.

Holden is on the brink and it is an almost daily news story.

Secured production until at least 2022? Once again, you obviously don't live in Adelaide.

And just because I'm a realistic, that does not make me pathetic. This mirrors the time leading up to the Ford announcement. It was quite clear it was on the cards, but people here were in denial.

The fact is, Mike Devereaux is a crucial part of the negotiations with the Government for production post 2016. He is now gone.

Me being positive about them staying open on this forum won't help one iota.

The point you don't get is Mike Devereaux or his successor will have an equal impact on negotiations with the govt. Holden have made their point clear, as have the Unions, and the supplier sector, local and state ministers not to mention Welfare agencies etc. A lot is at stake here.

Another clear point worth mentioning is the fact that multinationals are the govt, and Ford Australia's demise only further secures Holden's bargaining position and the 'national economic option' govco choose to take when determining the outcome of these negotiations.
Its timing of being 'vocal' was also a very strategic and calculated business decision.

And yes, these decisions are made in Detroit, just as Detroit have given Holden operations a life line to 2022. The unfolding events from now on will have an undoubted impact on how Detroit decide post 2022.

I don't live in Adelaide (nice by the way) but have spent 21yrs at Holden and fortunate to have been in a position where I know the companies direction and its commitment and long term plan for ongoing survival.

Also given you have a close friend whom depends on its survival, perhaps a touch of optimism on your part would go along way. Fact is even if they do fold in 2022, that's a near decade away - some people wont see 10yrs continuous employment all their lives.

Finally being realistic does not involve grabbing a simple news headline and trying to bend the truth without being able to substantiate what your implying.
Far too many industry experts here that don't work in the industry!
