Surface rust

Gday,
Not sure where to post this query so please move if necessary.

I just bought a cheap 2nd-hand bicycle and was wondering if anyone can tell me the best way to remove the surface rust.

There isn't much - ends of spokes, bit around pedal crank and the base of the handle bars.


I have an old bottle of CLR, worth trying??

Wire brush attachment on the drill seems excessive for these small areas, just use a toothbrush? (not the wife's)

Anyone have an old secret method that never fails!?

warm soapy water, steelo soap pads, bucket clean water, warm day, wd40/rp7 etc etc.

wet parts down
rub with steelo SOAP pads
rinse with clean water
leave to dry WARM day
lighly spray with whatever of above.

When a young un Id go round school/church/neighbourhood fetes buy up old bikes, never more than $5. if more than one at one place chain up somewhere onto next place...
then end of day back home get dad & trailer, load bikes and back home quick clean couple of coats of paint and sold within weeks $10+ easy money for a kid.

Cheers Tonz, will give it a shot.

I resprayed a bike or 2 when I was younger so was happy to just get stuck in with sandpaper, but here I just want the rust gone, not a new colour :-) Will have a go sometime this week.

rub with paint brush is usually enough.. at the most green scotchbrite pad

Shoot. when I was a kid we didnt even dream of rust remover in a can ot scotchbrite pads or or or stuff I feel old.

Or if you want.. Use some swimming pool Hydro acid ..
Add 2/3 water and rub over rusted area.. Then wash well with water..

Sandpaper works...especially on bikes.
