Hey ho.
I was wondering why my PC at work was running so friggin hot, found out why a few minutes ago. The fan is dead. Just got one question though... What can happen if you leave it as is? (PC on, no fan)

Depends on the chip you have and if you have throttling set to yes in your bios.
Best case... it throttles back to a very slow speed to stay cool enough, worst case... dead chip. The heatsink will help a bit but, for an AMD, its a matter of time till it burns up.

If work is paying for computers, do a few hardware benchmark tests, and turn off protection in the bios. Score a new computer or at least a new processor.
Id just spend the $2.50 and buy a new fan. |

Depending on the protection, it might just switch uff and not switch back on. I had a work hard drive which provided info to all (10) monitors in the shop. It kept switching off and the IT boffins wouldn't let me touch it. In the end I changed the fan after 2 weeks of waiting.

I know when I was cleaning my computer and didn't replace the fan correctly, it would turn on and then turn off again to protect it. I would advise against running a computer without a fan though as I have noticed quite a decline in performance on a hot day with fans lol.

Yea, need to know which fan for sure...Im guessing a case fan? In which case, generally not a priority, but should be replaced since a new one costs bugger all.
If it was the CPU fan, I wouldnt turn it on!

power supply fan, i'd say. thats gets alot hotter than the cpu. PSU on the other hand, gets boiling hot, and eventually goes POP
 you'll need to let us know which fan it actually is. |
