Default What on earth are Nissan thinking?

http://www.carsguide.com.au/news-and...80516_20131202

Just read that Nissan's Dualis replacement in Australia will be renamed "Qashqai". Who in their right state of mind thought that this ridiculous name would be suitable for the Australian market? Great way to kill your own sales Nissan! (Not that I care)

Secondly, I find it extremely sad that all car makers seem do be dishing out these days are a heap of soulless and generic SUV's. If you removed the Nissan badges from this vehicle, you could put just about any other badge on it and nobody would know the difference.

Oh, and Ford called, they want their Focus sedan tail lights back.

It's pretty amusing though, considering the XR8 next year will be reborn with the same spec engine as the FG GT, could you imagine being a HSV owner forking out all that money on a brand new GTS, then pulling up to the lights next to a FH XR8 and then sitting side by side all the way to 100 and beyond
Even more embarrasing would be the lower spec variants of the VF in HSV's stable getting whopped by a factory XR8.

Nissan are doing some very odd things lately! No diesel in new Patrol & Pathfinder & now this thing! All on top of dropping the successful Pulsar name a few years back before returning it again.
I believe Nissan make some very fine cars that are equal to or better than their Toyota rivals but dumb decisions like this just hands more sales to Toyota on a platter.
Shame really because I do like the Nissan brand!

Qashqai (pronounced [qaʃqaːʔiː]; also spelled Ghashghai, Ghashghay, Gashgai, Gashgay, Kashkai , Qashqay, Qashqa'i and Qashqai: قشقایی) are a conglomeration of clans of different ethnic origins, including Persian, Lori, Kurdish, Arab and (especially) Turkic.[2] They mainly live in the Iranian provinces of Fars, Khuzestan and southern Isfahan, especially around the city of Shiraz in Fars. They are bilingual, speaking the Qashqai language - which is a member of the Turkic family of languages and which they call Turki - as well as (in formal use) the Persian language. The Qashqai were originally nomadic pastoralists and some remain so today. The traditional nomadic Qashqai travelled with their flocks each year from the summer highland pastures north of Shiraz roughly 480 km or 300 miles south to the winter pastures on lower (and warmer) lands near the Persian Gulf, to the southwest of Shiraz. The majority, however, have now become partially or wholly sedentary. The trend towards settlement has been increasing markedly since the 1960s.

The Qashqai are made up of a number of tribes and sub-tribes including the Amele, Derre-Shuri, Kashkyoli, Shesh(6) Baluki, Farsimadan, Qaraja, Rahimli and Safi -Khanli.

Wikipedia is our friend. Qashqai as a name is not new.

The Nissan Qashqai, known as the Nissan Dualis in Japan and Australia, is a compact CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle) (J-segment in Europe) produced by the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan since 2007.

Seems the euros have been calling it Qashqai for years.

Nissan NZ pronounces it "Cash-Kai". The name change didn't seem to make them any less popular than they were (not very). Nothing like what Tiida did to Pulsar.

Hmm wonder what people would think of a 'Laser' badged Focus?

Not just the Pathfinder.

The new Patrol does not offer a diesel anymore either.

With all the marketing they put into the Dualis brand, why would they throw it all away? Unless they have some big marketing lined up, I think this might hurt them. You'd think they would have learned their lesson after they chucked out the Pulsar brand for no reason, only reinstate it years later after sales tumbled because nobody knew what a "Tiida" was. Oh Nissan.

They must have found some new brand of mind altering substances over at Nissan to think this is a good idea. Car names throughout history that have been difficult to pronounce have universally bombed or spend their entire life span being mispronounced.

It was only very recently that I actually heard someone who apparently knew pronounce the Touareg (Twar-egg) name which was actually correctly pronounced by them and no one else I've ever heard with the misfortune to have to do so.

Mind you we've managed a few ourselves - Nagari, Illinga spring to mind.

Cheers
Russ

The Tiida's problems extended to more than the name change from Pulsar, they were an ugly, ugly hunk of junk. It was a huge backwards step from Pulsar. I don't think it would have sold very well even if they did call it Pulsar.

Just look at the new Pulsar anyway, it's not a very good car either, and it hasn't sold very well either. So much so that Nissan dealerships are full of thousands of them unsold, because sales predictions have been so far off what Nissan thought they would be, that they have had to dump them at dealers and cancel the next few months of shipments.

Very true. I don't think I have seen one of those new Pulsars yet that wasn't a rental car. I would love to see what proportion of Nissan's sales are to the rental market.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was around 80% or more.

I find it ironic that their slogan is "Innovation that excites", yet their range is anything but innovative. With the exception of the R35, their range is nothing but a collection of generic, bland and uninspiring vehicles with very limited appeal.
