hi guys , My 72 capri gt v6 is fitted with a non original gearbox replaced with a type E 3 rail box from the later 3ltr capri \granada ,better shift and slightly better ratios. The problem I have is that the gearbox pops out of 2nd gear when changing back from 3rd to 2nd gear whilst driving spiritedly. only on downshifts not upshifts.when driving normally no problem only when pushing on. Before installing , the gearbox was checked by mechanic , as ok ,appears new syncros had been fitted and gears look ok ..Anyone have any idea's.Is it possible that the problem could be the gearstick connection to gearbox ?? Or is there anyone out there with experience with these g\boxes {40 years old**.cheers

Granada 3lt box is a Ford Type 5 (uprated Type E style IIRC), Capri Mk1 usually side linkage Type F (tho later ones went Ford Type 5 poss. around 73/74 -RS3100 era)
Halfway thru doing this conversion myself. Try the usual classic Ford specialists like Yesterford and others. |

Thanks allanGt, you are correct it is a type 5,it has an alloy bellhousing and is quite small with a castiron housing .It shifts well and less clunky than the type e,the conversion shouldn't be too difficult .you.re thoughts would be interesting .cheers

Key info here is it's an old school gearbox Slipping out of gear, more likely to be on down change (from loading) You have some spring loaded balls and slide plates in your gearbox, slide plate set is called the interlock (stops you from selecting 2 hears at once) The other (Detent) holds the gear in gear, this one could have a damaged ball (slots a ball bearing into a grove on the selector shaft and holds in gear) The more it slips out before you fix it the harder it will be to fix as it wears the components. New ball and stronger spring may fix. If you leave you will chamfer the bulk ring spline, if you do this too much you will be replacing the bulk ring assembly (ouch) So get onto this and keep you cost down. Hi steve , mate I think you're on the right track , because when I removed the top plate to have gearbox checked out the springs and the balls got mixed up and when reassembled most probably didn't go back to their original positions. Will have to remove box and check that part of the assembly .By the way I'm using semi syn oil in gearbox,do you think that this may be adding to the problem by being too slippery !!! Maybe I should go back to using good old mineral oil ???? Thanks for your comments ,cheers

My Type 5 has a cast iron bell housing, with (I think) alloy gearbox tail extension. All bolts are METRIC !!! The shift is just soooo much better than the Type F with the (my worn) linkages. Size wise, I reckon it is even a bit bigger than the Type F (tunnel clearance is more limited on the top). Check the numbers below. All the Type 5 parts (box, bell housing etc) should have part numbers cast into them. HOUSING - clutch 72GB 7505 GA TRANSMISSION ASSY 73EG 7003 BA HOUSING - transmission extension 72GG 7A039 AA (so sayeth the Capri Parts Manual RS3100 Supplement) |

My Ford Type 5 box is all cast iron casing - bellhousing, main case and tail extension. Burtons website says the same description. If you have alloy anywhere, then you have something else (or maybe a super special lightweight version, if they exist). And the gearchange is just soooooo much better than the old (admittedly worn) Type F. p.s. Metric bolts.......include the one thru the cross member - bigger than Type F. |
