Hi Guys, looking for some advice from the gardening gurus out there...
As we're looking to go Solar shortly and will be installing a 4kW solar power system on our roof, and seeing as I need a new mower anyways, I thought it would be logical to look at getting an electric lawn mower (will mow the lawn when its sunny = free power). The lawn is 'Sir Walter' Buffalo and the area is about 8m X 7m, so not very big at all. From what I can see, there are three main types of electric mowers: 1. Wheeled mower (normal type, just with electric motor), 2. Hover mower (Flymo type, no wheels, floats over the lawn), 3. Rotary cylinder type. My questions are: 1. Is any of the above three better suited to the type of lawn I have? 2. Do I need a grass catcher? The Flymo mower states that it cuts the grass so finely that it mulches at the same time? 3. Any well regarded brands/models I should check out? Likewise, any I should avoid? Cheers in advance.

I go 240V.lawn mower with catcher. cyl mowers with rollers are good for flat lawns. both take up room in the shed.
if you have battery tools there are often mower/trimers that suit. I wouldnt bother with a battery system unless you can use it for something else. mate has flymo and small trimmer with guide wheels for the fence edges. do you have green waist pick up or compost? I mulch my yard but it gets matted.

How much do you want to spend?
Choice magazine rates the Ryobi RLM3640L top with 87% ($499) Down to the (Bunnings) Ozito Ecomow Electric Mower ECO-320 at 71% ($134) For that much lawn I'd be going for the Bunnings special

The Bunnings Ozito special looks to be a goer.
At $134 and with a 2yr replacement warranty, cant really complain at all.

aldi has a range of battery garden stuff last week.
the 240V lawn mower has been under $80 on sale-and $50 on ebay. father in law has full size house yard purchased Australian made electric mower that victa took over.12V lead acid battery. my neighbour has john deer 38 inch to do a quick run around-then he tidy it all with the push vintage cyl mower.

just remember with a leccy mower, you will have to mow small amounts frequently, as they wont cut down several weeks growth. But for $134 you could afford to bin it if you werent happy with it.

Flymo's are great, and are a very very reputable and reliable brand with a long history. I even know guys who've picked them up at the dump second hand shops, stuck a new power cord on them, cleaned up the innards of the electric motor with lashings of RP7, and they usually get them to work again OK. That's because they're a quality product and can take a bit of neglect. Cheaper stuff, when neglected, usually gums up and is buggered and cannot be fixed.

+ 1 for the rotary push mower for a small yard like yours - they even come with grass catchers these days - and keeps the solar credits in credit too!
