My ST sits on 6.9 L per hundred average during the week commuting.

After two very spirited drives last long weekend, my average consumption went up...to 7.0 L

Got back to 6.9 L by the time I got to work on Monday, and didn't notice much of a difference dollar wise next time I fueled up.

The go kart handling means you don't have to burn fuel getting up to speed after slowing down, and every flat stick gear change is offset by the fuel sipping nature of the car the rest of the time.

Our Rio averages over 8L/100 working it out properly in peak hour and suburb driving. It's never gone into the 9s or above though.

I've heard them Rio's use a bit more juice than you'd think... There was a class action about it in America I think.

You'd struggle to get an ST to use 8L/100 - even with a heavy foot they seem to stay in the mid 7's...

Try getting a V8 to do any less than double that around town...

Yeh Kia is compensating the US but to be honest it's over a trivial difference in readings. I reckon a few manufacturers could easily be stung the same way. On the highway it gets in the 5's but we have a heavy foot around town and it gets 8 or mid 7's. It has a dual stage intake which actuates at certain revs for different torque/power levels so it can certainly use the juice. Still a miser when my XRT averages 13 and the AU 16 around town.

Yeah it needs a diff, but then those diffs are expensive. They obviously decided they'd sell more at a cheaper price even tho it kinda sorta really actually sucks a bit without it.

In this thread the OP asks about the Fiesta ST tho - with it's 1.6, lighter weight and less torque, the lack of a diff is not such an issue - it's generally rated far more highly as a drivers car than the Focus.

If you really want an LSD I'm sure you could buy one and get it fitted by one of the companies like Quaife etc, they make one for the XR5 Focus.

An LSD has a benefit of removing a lot of torque steer from a FWD car too.

No, I'm using almost a litre more than the published combined figure (overall) in a Fiesta ST. one of the cars that the OP is considering. And I drove the wheels off the thing cos I'm just as much of a hard old campaigner as you are! :P

Doesn't matter how anyone cuts it, hot hatches are pretty damn economical these days, which makes it easier to concentrate on the pros and cons of the rest of the package.

My former much-loved FG XR8 got 10-11Litres/100km consistantly, had 160,000 hwy kms and is now sitting at Power Ford for less than $20k - was hard to part with. They are blown out how new it drives. Is EGO, ZF, colour 6-stack, rev camera, 'C' iPhone module

Yeah for some reason I read focus and was thinking larger hatches. 7-8 sounds reasonable for a fiesta and a saving of $10 per 100km.

I guess it really is down to if the op thinks he can live with the smaller car long term for the sake of that money, I know I couldn't.

In hindsight I feel I should've paid off the xr6t and held onto it longer as my money saver rather than go small.

Highway km's you say eh... Even on the highway, the Fiesta would be using half that...

I tell ya, as much as I love the rumble of a V8, there is something very smug and enjoyable about getting great MPG.

I took one of those new Renault Meganes up to Bright for the weekend - did nearly 1200km, did not put a drop of Diesel in the thing, it averaged 4.8L/100 - even with a spirited dash to the top of Mount Buffalo.

When we were sitting on the Hume at 112km/h doing 3.8/100 I was pointing to cars we were passing and telling my missus how much more fuel they were using.

She told me to shut up pretty quickly, but I was having a great time!

Exceed 10L/100? yeah you can but the V8 driven the same way will use a lot more.
Aahhh, ok.
I had an AU V8 then a Focus XR5 and now an ST and i can tell that when all cars have been driven in anger neither the XR5 (Very modded) nor my ST got anywhere near the AU's fuel consumption.

My AU was constantly around 15L/100.
XR5 was 11/100 (never knew it standard because it was purchased new and modded/tuned with in 2 weeks.
My ST is at 8.6L/100 have never seen more than 9

Anyway just posting my experience, not trying to argue.

Back to the OP which I believe was actually between the Eco Sport 1.0 mini Suv and the Fiesta ST...

I have had a little drive in the 1.0 - man it goes well eh? I did find the Echo a bit 'cheap' feeling tho - although the Titanium, which I believe is the only trim level with that engine, fixes things a little.

I still haven't flogged an ST yet, although I have flogged a few of it's competitors - the Swift Sport, the old and new Clio 200's... It's a hard one, I quite like the idea of souping up that little 1.0 - you can get decent power out it - and a pretty decent note, they sound a bit like a flat 6... Plus with the extra ground clearance - dunno what you do for work but if there's any rough tracks involved it's really a one horse race...

The 1.0 uses a smidge more fuel than I would've thought, but it does pump out a fair bit of grunt so fair enough I guess.

your either a v8 person and nothing else is considered even if they are slower and less fuel efficient or not.me i dont look at anything unless it has an 8 in it,with 4 in the shed and an explorer coming next week, a 351 in ski boat .i dont even worry about fuel economy i fill them when they need it and enjoy them.and that is the main thing is enjoy what you have

Yeah until you hit the limiter - they sound like they have another 3000rpm to go then zing... zing... zing...

Speaking of triples I've heard the new BMW 1.5 triple sounds pretty good - that's a pretty decent cylinder size... (500cc)

I reckon they'll be a thing of the past soon enough, they're already studying what artificial noise is best to project out the front of these new 'silent' cars so that people don't walk out in front of them...

We're right on a tipping point, where a main stream SUV is advertising 1.9 L/100... It's just a matter of time before plug ins take over...

Small capacity turbo's will be what enthusiasts choose - and we will soon be discussing what triple or twin cylinder engine sounds best in the not too distant future I bet.

Which is precisely why I'll grab a GT and hold on to it as my main drive and keep my lotus as my weekender.
