Hi all, just did a trip to Sydney via the New England hwy down to Dee Why, over to Windsor & back to Tamworth (through the Putty & Jerries Plains) in the Futura & did some fuel consumption figures which i'm pretty happy about.

Before i left i hit the upper intake with some 3 Bond engine conditioner, performed a quick oil/filter change (15/40 Valvoline engine armour, Ryco z9) & fitted a new o2 sensor. From 65lt of ulp91, it travelled 800km, fuel consumption combined it did 8.1lt/100km, hwy 6.7lt/100km - from a engine with 314,xxx kays on it!

I was driving to the speed limits & only giving it some when overtaking, i did notice idle was smoother after the u/c intake clean & it appears it also improved my fuel usage also which is why i wanted to try it. I'm happy

Hi Uncle Ken, the 3 bond is a foaming action upper cylinder cleaner designed to remove carbon deposits from your engine's upper intake components (very similar to Subaru's upper cylinder cleaner) - throttle body, intake manifold, valves & pistons etc.

Firstly, this treatment should be done just before oil change time imo because your motor oil will get contaminated with this cleaner / carbon blowby.

I just followed the instructions on the can which is - remove vacuum hose from brake booster (ups idle a bit helps engine not to stall), give the can a good shake, remove intake tube from throttle body & with motor not running spray half a can into throttle body while holding up the throttle butterfly. Now let sit for 5 minutes, then start motor (with removed intake tube), motor may shake a touch then idle will equalize.

Now with motor running, up the idle a touch by holding the throttle slightly open - (we dont want the motor to stall when spraying the foam in while the motor is running) then spray the rest of the can onto throttle blade in little bursts at 5 second intervals (spraying the foam carelessly / excessively can hydro lock the motor so be careful) until can is empty. When the can is emptied into to throttle body / intake manifold turn motor off & let sit for another 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes restart motor & observe if there's any smoke coming out of the tailpipe - the smoke is burnt off carbon deposits from your upper intake system & the amount of smoke is dependent on how dirty your upper intake system is. When you are satisfied that the cleaner is burnt off (after smoke clears or about 3 minutes of motor running) turn motor off, reinstall your intake pipe & brake booster hose. Take your car out for a short brisk drive & observe how its running & idling. Hopefully you notice a smoother idle & slightly perkier performance but also after a week or two better fuel economy!

Once happy with how its running, you should dump your engine oil now because of the foam cleaner contaminating your motor oil. Do this treatment once a year to keep your motors intake components clean & maximise your AU's fuel economy!
