Hey all,
I've had my MC for 5 months now, bought it used for a song and have been loving it so far. One thing that's driven me mad since I bought it though is that the laminate on the directional buttons on either side of the steering wheel has started to peel away from the plastic beneath it, causing a 'wavy' effect to look at and feel. Is anyone aware of a simple enough way to locate and replace these buttons? I found something from the UK that was a replacement for all buttons on the steering wheel and the wiring. That is a little overkill as I only need to replace the plastic covers. It's a purely aesthetic fix, but sometimes they can be the most rewarding projects to work on with cars. I've thrown in some photos into an imgur album in case my description wasn't clear enough, plus a glamour shot of my Mondo because I'm so proud http://imgur.com/a/WH048#0

Gotta love the Mondeos!
I see what you mean by wavy. I wonder if the extra heat from your car being black had anything to do with the condition of the buttons?? I'm of no help with how to replace them, but others here might know of a fix. GK

Yeah it would've most likely been due to the heat.

Is your car still under Ford Warranty?
If used, what about the second hand statutory warranty? If a private sale, no chance...

Yes it us under used warranty with the local Ford dealer, didn't even think of that. I'll chase up with them.

I had a 2010 Titanium Wagon in Panther Black. Had 236000 k's, when I sold it and had no Issues with the Steering Wheel Buttons' Lacquer becoming wavey. The Top Bit of the Driver Side Doorhandle Trim, did become flakey and started to peel off, but that was my own doing. I had a Set of Keys in my right Hand when I shut the Door and scratched it
then over time it flaked and peeled. I sanded it back and put some clear Lacquer on it. That fixed it

Hi. A new car warranty might cover it but if the buttons still work I doubt you will have much luck with a used car warranty as it is only cosmetic. Cheers MD

Hey all,
Great news is I have replaced the buttons and did it for much cheaper than brand new genuine parts would have cost me. During the 6 month service I asked the Ford team to give me a quote on getting the silver directional buttons replaced. It came up to roughly $750 for the parts and labour. I wasn't surprised and began my search for a second hand Mondeo steering wheel that had good condition buttons. I found a listing on ebay from Brisbane for $125, no airbag, just the wheel and buttons. I watched this for a couple of weeks, waited until closing day and made a successful offer of $100 with free postage. After that, I had Ford pull apart my wheel, and put in the good condition buttons from the purchased wheel. They also put the old buttons into my purchased steering wheel in working order so that I could sell the wheel if I chose to. The results are http://imgur.com/a/3CSkT. I've taken pictures with the old buttons installed in the spare wheel and the new buttons installed in my car for contrast. It's amazing what a difference it makes to the interior overall. All up, this cost me just over $350. Still a decent amount, but much less than it would have cost me to do it all genuine brand new parts.

Well done! A much better outcome than $750 from Ford.
