Default Aussies dead in Shot down plane crash over Ukraine.

Not related to MH370, but apparently a Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 has just been shot down near the Russian-Ukraine border. About 300 people on board dead, including 23 US citizens.

Reports of up to perhaps 27 Australians onboard that flight, Australian passports appear to have been identified in the wreckage.

Yet I just heard the wireless tell me there are no Aussies on board?

What nut case shoots down a passenger plane?

Edit. News just said 27 as well.

Dutch officials apparently confirmed 27 Australians onboard, DFAT hasn't confirmed yet. This photo seems to confirm at least one Australian.

Unfortunately that is the answer. Nutcases.

It's what happens when marginalised groups get their hands on proper military hardware and think they have a just cause on their hands. I'm sure they thought they were shooting at something else but that's what inexperience will do.

Not the first time it has happened and it probably won't be the last and while it is easy to place blame on the idiots who pulled the trigger (figuratively speaking) there is probably more blame to be had by those who actually supplied them with this equipment.

Condolences to the friends and families of those on-board.

Russ

There is more to this story than we are being led to believe at this stage. Commercial planes don’t just get shot down in this day and age, especially not on a route that is commonly used.

funny how those passports survived a plane getting shot down and torn apart in such good condition.

Ukraine is blaming russian separatists, Ukraine separatists are blaming the Ukraine govt. Apparently Russian separatists are saying they have the black box and are giving it to russian authorities. Malaysian airlines and the Ukraine are investigating this but the UK has already approached the UN on what to do, US is blaming russia and john mccain is saying if it was the russian military or separatists there will be hell to pay. now russian backed cossack militants are saying they did it.
precursor to WW3?

bit off topic sorry, all the while MH17 is going to be splashed all over out media outlets, were hearing sfa bout israel. Last night as the MH17 incident unfolded Israel presidednt Netanyahu has ordered a ground assault into Gaza, the media loves decoys

Yes they do when they fly over a rebel war zone. It isn't a commonly used route these days for this reason. MH are one of the only airlines flying this route. Qantas fly to the south.

Not funny at all, a missile strike on a plane the size of a 777 generally tears the plane apart and the contents rains out.

Channel 9 are crossing to Gaza, looks to be a large amount of firepower getting pumped into the Gaza area.

I'm pretty sure you'll find those two aircraft were both military aircraft, and would certainly not have been cruising over that area at over 30,000 feet...!!!

It is a war zone, but it is not that uncommon for commercial aircraft to fly over war zones. I think most people would be surprised at just how many aircraft actually fly over Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq on a regular basis.

Let us just pray that this appalling attack on innocents doesn't escalate into something far worse?
And that history doesn't repeat what occurred almost 100 years ago to the day.

Geoffrey Thomas, on sunrise this morning, indicated the opposite. Apparently that corridor is an extremely busy one between central Europe to Central Asia.

And there had apparently been no restrictions placed on commercial airlines using that corridor prior to the MH17 incident.

There's a twitter post that was translated from Ukrainian Militia and has since been deleted that read:

"Just downed and AN-26 in Torez region, lying somewhere near the Progress mine. We warned them - no flying in our sky. Here's video proof of another bird down. Bird fell behind terricon, didn't touch the residential are. No civilians harmed."

I'm on mobile so can't link a source.

Horrifyingly this seems to be a mistaken identity as the only plane that was shot down at the time was MH17.

Reports at the moment say 27 Aussies on board...

They did earlier report that many/most civilian airliners do not use that route. The US airlines had been advised not to use it. He confirmed qantas and us airlines dont use the route.
But googling the news, it appears many were still flying over Ukraine.

It seems to me it may be one and the same, as it looks like the only source they had was from the Militia themselves.

I read one article, and apparently the black box has already been sent to russia, what's the bet it will unsurprisingly be too damaged to get anything out of it comrades ?

Another fellow said he thought the rebels could not have shot the aircraft down as they did not have the missiles or the expertise to shootdown an aircraft at 35000 feet.
Whatever the outcome , someone needs their *** kicked for this.

Pretty standard if you look at the previous days flights through there of MH17.
They appeared to be passing just north of Donetsk all week..would be pretty sad if it comes to pass that this flight was targeted after being watched all week.
