Double DIN in AU-Mounting methods

So, the time has come to replace the premium sound head unit in my Ghia. I can no longer play cds and its driving me nuts.

I'd like to fit a Double DIN DVD deck, my main concern is mounting it.

I know a few blokes here are running them in AUs, how are you mounting them?

I'm surprised nobody has answered by now. The problem with mounting a non standard Double din in the AU is if it is flush at the top it sticks out about 2cm at the bottom. If it is flush at the bottom then it is recessed in at the top about 2cm.

If that does not worry you then go for it. If the Aesthetics look out of place then go a single din unit and maybe look at a flip out head. With the right accessories you can still use your steering wheel buttons just make sure the head unit has the appropriate hole in it.

I did run a double DIN unit in my old AU previously. I think I used some of the strapping they use for centrallock actuators in those universal kits.

I was hoping to see how others had mounted theirs.

I also considered a flip out unit but worried about it clearing the bulky AU dash facia and the stereo facia itself.

The steering wheel controls seem to require a fairly pricey adapter to work. It seems generally its only some Jap cars that work natively.

At this stage I'll likely fit a single DIN unit and the Aerpro full facia to fill the gap and mount it. They work quite nicely. I've also been offered one I don't mind for an inexpensive price.

I hoped to see how others had mounted up theirs!

I mounted mine by wedging it with timber and cork... But Plan on making a bracket that uses the screws behind the ash tray and some 1mm zink anneal...

I remember I had two units in mine at one stage and thought I had mounted and kind of jammed them nice and securely. Then one day someone turned in front of me, forcing me to brake hard. The sudden stop led to them flying out and onto the centre console against the T-bar!

Mine was fitted by the retailer and they used one of the 'strapping' thingos at the top on each side bent into a right angle and screwed into the factory mounting point. There's nothing holding it in other than that (I think it sits on a part of the dash frame?) and it's been fine for years though the trim drops off occasionally :-s

Mine sticks out a little at the bottom and is recessed a little at the top...

someone was looking at using a dead factory unit to make a fibreglass mould to create a factory look mounting face with a recess. Sounds like a good idea but a lot of trouble. I think a single din is the best option. Got a space for gauges then too.

used the trim that was around it originally and grinded it down at the top to make it fit... then build it up on the sides and underneath with some expandafoam and shaved it down to suit then carbon wrapped it... then i decided i didnt like the carbon wrap and have since remodeled it completely and going to refit it today.. might put up another pic this arvo if i remember

oo forgot to say. pretty much held there by a really good friction join.... haha seems to work.. might make some rubber wedges or something though to make it abit tighter though

when i had a double din in my au i use these window packers taped to the sides of the unit so it was Friction fitted

The place where I bought mine offered to do a show car style fascia like that for $300 but couldn't give me a firm price so I said no. Liking at that I wish if said yes, that's a big improvement!

well here is mine i use the factory fascia by trimming it and adding balsa wood to make it thicker, it's not as good as the one in the LTD but i like it

We had the single/double din dilemma with our old Fairlane and eventually went with a single din Clarion with an adjustable screen.
