falcons traction control setup is pretty good. its not that intrusive, so doesn't kick in at the first sign of loss of traction.

as much as I have a great deal of sympathy for the deceased son I lay all blame at the foot of the father.

it is the fathers, indeed both parents, duty to protect, nourish and guide the child that they have brought into this earth, he has failed, he killed his son in a stupid act.

he knows and he must live with it.......but I really feel justice has not been served here.

I would like to put forward an alternative view but let me state first this guy is guilty of killing his child NO question.
I believe that the government attitude to car modification has contributed to the father's action & apparent stupidity.
By having a policy of 'any modification is a bad modification', you force people to back yard 'specialists' with little to no understanding of the way modifications can have unexpected consequences through knock on effects.
Couple this with NO regular inspections for road-worthiness, which is the case in WA, and you have a recipe for disaster.
The situation in other states is similar, due the road-worthiness industry rarely being inspected or reviewed, as our authorities are loath to enforce the laws they have but would rather wait for tragedy to strike and respond with draconian laws.

Given the replies so far on spooled diffs, why would you want to run one on a road car?

to me, it shows 'intent'. there is no other logical reason why you would even go down that road.

i owned a car with one in it. it was like it when i bought it. i drove it home from sydney to adelaide, managing to stay on the black stuff the whole time. i lived with it until i could afford an LSD and then swapped it. i refused to let my wife drive the car during this time as well. they have the potential to be very unpredictable if you aren't aware of the characteristics.

And you and your passengers survived in that car due to responsible and safe driving. Nothing due to the spool itself which is what the media failed to explain. It makes great headlines blaming a 'modification' rather than a thoughtless father.

No, he cooperated fully with police and pled guilty at the first opportunity.

The sad thing is that whilst there are lowlifes out there who would just shake this off, he's not. He will spend the rest of his life punishing himself worse than any court.

As for those morons proclaiming "driver inexperience," grow up. Tragedies like this are the inevitable consequence of hooning.

I love cars, I AM a Motoring Enthusiast, and I for one am sick of being lumped in the same category as brain-dead bogans.

I would like to know what possible benefit a spool has in a road car? the differential was invented very early for the precise reason of better control and easier steering. Other than drifting or drag racing what benefit do they have?

Aside from that, there is also no legitimate reason to shift from 3rd to 2nd and plant it under any conditions on any road. he has bought this upon himself and deserves no sympathy. the unfortunate thing is legitimate modifications will be even more restricted as a consequence, the stupid minority ruin it for the sensible majority.

Economics. If you have a lot of power and sticky tyres then the LSD will be stressed a lot more and the clutches will quickly wear. In some cases they will not hold the power with a sticky tyre.

You can either continue to replace the clutches often or go to a spool which costs less then the clutch pack in a LSD. It will never wear out.

Nowdays trutrac differentials are the answer.

Many of you will likely know about it but the New Zealand Low Volume Vehicle Technical Association takes care of checking car mods over here and they do a bloody good job, perhaps Australia needs to adopt it along with, as you say, regular warrant of fitness checks.

After owning a 351 with a LSD, it was a very quick learning curve on how NOT to drive. Combining the above with inexperience equals a recipe for disaster. On wet roads through intersections, even the tiniest bit of acceleration would drive the car in a straight line, thankfully maturity (24 at the time) I never had a problem. Mini spools are illegal for a reason, the belong on the race track and nowhere else.

So you can drive your "road car" which is actually a drag car to the strip. This happens not to far from where I live. Funny thing is they drive over a steep winding hill. I wonder how much tyre tread they go through just getting there and back, not to mention the fuel!

I hate the term "hoon", the guy is a moron.

Hoon is just a term used by the government to lead the masses, punish P platers and give police powers beyond what they are entitled.

Awful lot of people who think that mini spools are just fine and dandy for street use...

Awful lot of people then that have literally no idea how a differential is supposed to work and why it does what it does...one look at some numptie wanna-be drag racer with a spool fitted and one wheel hopping as he takes a tight corner in town will reveal that to you...

The guy in that accident was a tool on so many levels it isn't funny. Spools have no place on street cars, full stop.
