Hawkgirl, depends what you want to spend and which part of Geelong (Belmont, Corio etc)
I use tripadvisor as my yardstick, and take note of the reviews on there.
That's MY yardstick.. Damo's is where the best steak is at!

cheers guys.

More along the lines of "X is a bodgy suburb to be avoided", something like that.
Good places to eat suggestions also welcome

Sheraton on the waterfront.

Go to Torquay and stay at the new golf club.

Mercure is okay and budget.

We have traveled to Geelong two yeaas in a row to take the family to the Geelong Fun Park. The first time (2012), we stayed at the Rose Garden Motel. Not a bad place to stay. Nice and clean, very friendly owners, but nothing real fancy and a fair way out of town.

The second time (2013) we stayed at the Vue Apartments. Great location right on the edge of the city, close to Eastern Beach and all of the restaurants located in the CBD. Not exactly the cheapest but like real estate, it is all about location, location, location! Oh, and the views from the rooms is also pretty good. Pretty modern apartments with everything you would expect.

This place is certainly where we were planning on staying this year, except the missus decided to break a couple of fingers a few weeks before we were due to make our annual pilgrimage.

Hope that helps. If you want any more info, sing out.

Coming from someone who lives in Gtown: Avoid the town area at all costs, go to some place like Torquay as suggested! Gtown is okay for an eat, but that's about all really, until Summer hits.

Search hard for specials at Vue. They are really well located and would be my pick if price is not your main concern..

Sheraton is a great place to stay, right on the waterfront and across the road from the CBD. And Parkers would be probably the best steakhouse in Victoria. A must go for anyone...
