Hey bud, although i've never driven a Probe... does that sound wrong?.. Anyway, I honestly wouldn't get one. I mean, what will his mates say if he's driving round in a "Probe". It'll probably be reliable enough but those looks coupled with that name make it a rather poor choice for sons first car. Thats simply my opinion though.

A few alternatives, possibly Toyota Celica, Mazda Mx6, Toyota Mr2, all decent 2 door coupes and fairly cheap. Or if you'd prefer to stick with Ford perhaps a 2 door laser, my mate had one and it was epic. My brother had one as well and it chucked the water pump belt at the start of a 100km journey, still made it no blown head.

Default Re: Crazy Question

The probe, whilst largely an orphan in this country, is actually a a good buy at the prices they are seen for now. A lot of the components are shared with Mazda models on whose platform it was based particularly the RX7 which donated the headlight mechanisms and dash cluster or Mazda 626 (Ford Telstar) which provided all the mechanical components so the only hard to get buts will be body panels.

You haven't said which model but the 3.0 V6 is a lively thing to drive as is the 2.2 turbo while the NA 2.2 is not what you'd call sporty but rather adequate.

Cheers
Russ

I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.
It's basically a Mazda MX6 with a poor restyle and impossible to get parts.
Plenty of excellent sporty cars out there for under 3 grand. The Probe is not one of 'em.
Just my opinion having worked on a couple.

Aren't they also front wheel drive? I would personally go something else, but to have not heard heaps about them. Do see them driving around sometimes but rarely.
