Samsung will introduce a smart watch named the Galaxy Gear next month that can make phone calls, surf the web and handle emails, sources say.
The Galaxy Gear will be powered by Google's Android operating system and go on sale this year to beat a potentially competing product from Apple, the two sources said. The device will be unveiled on September 4, two days before the IFA consumer electronics show begins in Berlin, one of the sources said, asking not to be identified because the plans are private. Asia's biggest technology company is racing against other electronics makers, including Sony, to create a new industry of wearable devices as the market for top-end smartphones nears saturation. The global watch industry will generate more than $US60 billion in sales this year, and the first companies to sell devices that multitask could lock customers into their platform, boosting sales of smartphones, tablets and TVs. "It will carve a niche for sure as this is an initial product in the market," said Chung Chang Won, an analyst at Nomura Holdings. "Wearable devices could be one of the trends in the smartphone market, but I'm not sure yet whether watches or glasses will set the trend." Advertisement The Galaxy Gear being released next month won't have a flexible display, though the company is continuing to work on developing a bendable screen, one source said. It will be unveiled the same day as Samsung's Galaxy Note 3, a combination smartphone and tablet, or "phablet". Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung's mobile business, said in March the company was working on a watch device. Apple has a team of about 100 designers working on a smart watch to be released later this year, two sources said in February. It'll be so little though, it'll take forever and a day to log into email and respond, don't you think?
On a serious note, I bet I have 2 friends who would buy this. It'll be the next show off device to have. |

I love watches, but they have to be mechanical.
I think I am getting too old to keep up with the latest trends in personal communication.....

Jack has had a mobile phone wrist watch for the past 3yrs or 4yrs. It comes with a little stylus for hitting the key pad and you wear a blue tooth device to answer calls.
He can not surf the internet on it, but mobile phone wrist watches have been out for ages. Cheers Col

Hmm...I think technology is starting to move more from practicality and more towards the 'because we can' attitude

It can be the smartest phone/watch in the world, but it's not worth jack if my mobile provider (let's call them A) has no reception at my workplace, whilst provider B, comes in loud and strong.
Gees Australia, it's the Twenty First Century for crying out loud. If I bought a DT watch, I'd spend half my time talking to my wrist Okay, and here's something that may not have been patented yet, so go for it boys, but flip me some change huh. So, you have your DT watch and you want to show off some pics or watch a movie. Have a postcard flat/foldable screen which is wifi'd to the watch, something you can carry around in your pocket or bag.

I've never believed the 'mobile phones cause brain cancer' crowd. Unfortunately Cancer is a luck dip.

Apple announced today that it has developed a breast implant that can store and play music.
The iboob will cost from $499 to $699, depending on cup and speaker size. This is considered a major social breakthrough, because women are always complaining about men starring at their breasts and not listening to them.

Unless it looks like the one in the old Dick Tracy comics (or the underrated Warren Beatty movie which had the exact same design), I'm not interested...

An old thread , but with a vast array of smart watches of late , i thought it might be worth reviving, and perhaps by now a few more dudes and dudets may have had a chance to give us the good oil on whatever they have been using.
i was having a bit of a look at some watch reviews the other day with some of the popular ones, and what i learned was really the majority of them are really an accessorie for your mobile, and no doubt they are all very useful and clever in what they do.....but.....check this out ! http://www.getneptune.com/#experiment when the screen loads ...scroll down. This thing (neptune pine) is the full monty of smart watches, you can put your sim in it and it is a full function smart phone, via button/s it unclips from the band and becomes a phone, pretty cool device i reckon even if a bit ungainly on the wrist. |

I think the 'fitbit' thing is taking off more than smart watches, seems most brands now have their own version.
My missus just got one and loves it, tells her how slack she's being, how much sleep she hasn't had. |

Dont be so negative!
Fads come and go and if this is just a fad, it will go. Many like techy things but if they do not live up to expectations they always disappear as quick as they appear. If it isn't it will sell and continue to do so.

A new dick tracy watch from samsung a couple of days ago, it actually looks quite good imo, with inbuilt sim so no need to have your phone with you except for the initial fire up apparently.
