Regarding being upgraded (either free or at a discount), my travel agent friend tells me that they generally do it in the order of how much you paid for your ticket. If you booked your ticket ages ago and paid a high / full price then you will be one of the first to asked or offered. If, on the other hand you bought it last minute / during a sale / 'buy 1 get 1 free' etc then you really have no chance of getting anything. The check in people can see what you paid for your flight, and what price bracket you fall under. Economy has several price brackets alone, which is why you may have people sitting next to you that could have paid 20% more or 30% less than you did. And that is the general rule. Which is why I will probably never get an upgrade..

Well rang up today and was quoted $4000 for all 4 of us 1 way... This is more than double the gap on what we paid for our tickets and the current business class sale price.. Oh well might try for s**ts and giggles at check in

when traveling alone I always checkin an hour early, have a yak and flirt with the checkin chick, and mostly get offered an exit aisle. Wont work if you are travelling with kids or are 10 mins before close.

business is a rip (jet star in particular for what you get) just spring for the exit row upgrade - but man i hate jetstar (and they hate me after my last hawaii trip - went something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-VLtpSZh7o
now they play a warning about not drinking duty free booze on board (what did you think we were doing odering 60 cans of coke with ice). |

Jetstar is the worst travel experience one could subject a human to. I would rather not go

Bumped my departure time from Sydney after Bathurst this year by an hour but at least they didn't shorten it. Should have never gone back after they also left four of us stranded in Adelaide with no accomodation some years back as they had cancelled my late flight home ( so they said ) .
I told them that's it, Virgin from now on and have already organised Virgin for the next Clipsal. GT450 |

Some carriers will not allow you to book that seat - and if they do, there is a surcharge. My FIL just went through this last week actually.
When I was traveling alone I did exactly what danzvtil suggested. You also need to agree to assist passengers if the plane crashes - I have scored the seat while on the plane after the people sitting there refused to agree to help passengers

I agree though Jetstar sucks big time, I got asked at the check-in counter when we were flying from Sydney to Patong on Jetstar if I wanted to upgrade to business and I said how much and they said some ridiculous number, I said no thanks.

If you wanted to fly business or first, wouldn't one book and pay for it when arranging the trip?
Understand trying to score emerg exit seats for the extra legroom.

Exit rows generally don't show up on the online seat selection. The staff need to make the assessment for suitability face to face.

Nah. I've been on gold and platinum for a handful of years now and on any domestic flight I can pretty much sit anywhere I like in cattle class.
