Bit of debate raging in the Falcon AU to BF section on FF.
I am going to replace the head gasket (first timer for an AU). Not sure what type to use, getting conflicting advice. Both MLS & Graphite ones have been suggested. So which one dammit? |

good question mate, however on my own xr6 the stocker ford head gasget has lasted 230,000 k`s and its still going, when the time comes to replace it ................i will be putting the factory stocker one back on.
Edit: as long as the block deck is clean and in good nick and alloy head is surfaced and in good condition and the job is done properly i would be expecting good mileage out of the same factory gasket. |

Mill the head to make sure it's dead flat, make sure the block is dead true - as in using a stone and kerosene. Block the passages off with kitchen paper towel and change them out regularly while you're doing it.
Good luck!

I have no idea what gasket was used on the AU2's in the factory, nor do I know if the head has been off this car before.
I have chosen a graphite gasket/kit from Durapro as all the reading I've done suggests the grahpites have a higher tolerance for a head/block surface that is old & likely not to be perfect. The head IS getting shaved, & I am using wet/dry sand paper & a cork block on the engine block, combined with WD 40. I'm not a newcomer to doing head gaskets, it's just I've never done the AU model before. Plus I really love this engine so I'm doing my homework before I don the surgical gloves! |

Ford parts told me today they no longer do head bolts, have to go aftermarket. Mls head gasket still available.

Would this be a good time to get a reco head and or get oversized valves to bring it up to xr6 hp spec?

Job is done now. Not worried about upgrades, just happy to have the thing running. It actually runs a smidge better now.
I documented the work on my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...h_9x6GV_omXtRU Give it a watch if you're interested. XR6 hp offers little more than what I've got already. Short unrestricted intake, 2.5" exhaust right thru, high flow cat', 1 muffler, headers. She'll keep pace with the XR's ! |
