How do you adjust the clutch?

How do you adjust the clutch in the XR8? Its very hard to put into any gear and want to check the cable first before anything else.

on the fire wall in side the engine bay next to the brake booster there is the clutch cable, wind the nut in towards the firewall to give yourself more pedal.

I was always told to pull the clutch cable towards the front of the car, then adjust the nut along the thread so that there was a 20mm gap between the nut and the spout on the firewall that the cable goes through.

20mm is a rule of thumb I guess.

Does anyone know why my clutch seem to be engaging almost on the floor?? Plus its very hard to put the car in any gear!

Try spinning the nut back the other way?

Mine bites about 2inchs or so off the carpet..

also make sure the firewall isn't cracked as that will cause the same sort of problem, although if that is the case, just tightening the cable up won't help, the cable may also be stretched too much....

i have to get under the car to adjust it dont i? Sounds like a stupid question but havent done this before

Nah man, pop your bonnet and on the right hand side of the brake booster coming out of the firewall is a black cable with thread and a nut on it. The nut is hard up agaisnt the firewall.. grab the cable pull it back to you about 5cm and give the nut a spin toward the firewall.
Do this until you are happy with the pedal feel, over do it and your clutch will slip a little, under do it and your clutch wont engage properly causing crunching. You will be able to tell straight away.. move the nut about 2cm at a time..

Adjustment
* It is essential to carry out clutch control cable adjustment before the clutch is operated to avoid clutch diaphragm damage.
* With the clutch primary adjustment set as described previously, the cable must be adjusted to obtain the specified distance between the clutch pedal and floor pan.

1. Remove clutch pedal trim pad and lightly load clutch pedal so that throw-out bearing contacts diaphragm fingers.
2. Measure distance from pedal to floor pan, floor covering removed.
3. Adjust nut on firewall mount to achieve 140mm dimension from clutch pedal to floor pan.
4. Check the cable clearance not less than 2.5mm clearance between the adjuster nut and firewall mount.
*After the pedal height has been checked and adjusted if necessary carry out the follwoing adjustment.
5. The clearance between the pedal and stop must be set to 12.5mm, then the clutch switch can be adjusted.
6. (a) Using an ohmmeter set on Rx1 range, placing it across the terminals.
6. (b) Loosen the clutch switch and slide it until the ohmmeter reads zero and tighten the switch.
6. (c) Release pedal and connect wiring.

As mentioned previuosly check pedal box is not broken.

My au xr8 had its clutch replaced 7 months ago
Since then I have replaced the pedal box.
Now the clutch is slipping. Why would this be happening

Could be over adjusted .wind the nut out about 10/20ml and see if it helps.if not could be a bit more serious

Usually when you have a new linkage/cable operated clutch it comes with the clutch cutting in close to the top of its travel, as the clutch wears down the pedal gradually cuts in closer to the floor, but if the pedal box or firewall is flexing under load it wont be disengaging the clutch properly.

I think the clutch is worn out. After 7 months is a bit strange.
Ive asked the mechanic who installed it to fix it, he said wasn't his problem ***** off and take it up with fair trading.
Anyone suggest a good clutch guy in sydney
The car hasnt been flogged and yes i will be taking it up with fair trading.
