Ok so im driving along the freeway the other night when my 2 month old alternator/water pump belt decides to break... hmmm. So i get it home and put a new one on and the next day go to check it out when i notice its half chewed! To my shock im looking at the alignment when i notice some rubber coming out the front of the balancer! It looks like it about to fall off!! Will this happen if i drive it to the mechanics? Also, If anyone knows any decent mechanics in west brisbane let me know... got qouted $400 from one mob...

First make sure that it is just the balancer. As they allso have trouble with endfloat in the crank . A car i see a lot used to chew up p/steer & alt belts every 2 weeks and after looking at it I found that it was the crank shaft moving back and forward that was making the belts chew or just slip off . |

For $30 you can buy a universal harmonic balancer removal tool. If can swing a spanner do it yourself. A new balancer for an I6 is about (0 I think retail from repco. you might beable to get them cheaper. Make sure you get the right type for your belt setup. You do want to be careful. A lump of metal spinning at 3000rpm coming off isnt healthy. it can go through your rad or through your timing cover. Saying that mine on the EB went, when i came to change it the outer ring slipped off by hand. I have no idea how it stayed on. Being an externally balanced motor the vibrations were massive. Thats not a prob with the I6 natural balance design tho.
