Correction:

Where it says 55 it should read
55=Cortina XL, bucket seats (Taxi)

AND, the line Model - 12136, the 6=XL

NOT GL as first stated (in both cases), sorry!

The engine code 'J' on the ID Plate says it's factory fitted with a 250ci low compression motor. These cars were all imported from the UK in CKD (completely knocked down) kit form for assembly here in Australia at Homebush ('K' code) and later here in Melbourne ('G' code). From October 1972, Ford Australia starting fitting the 200 and 250 6-cyl engines in the factory and I believe strengthened the chassis as well. Your car is a definite 6-cylinder code and so I'd say the previous owner is confused because we retrofitted the sixes in the Ford factory from October 1972. Of course, the UK never got the 6-cylinder version like we did, they were using only 4-cylinder engines of varying capacity, 1.3, 1.6 & 2.0 litre.

Went down to the Phillip Island 'Festival of Motorsport' Historic meeting on the weekend. There, in a book/magazine stall was an original Ford 4-cylinder Cortina Workshop manual. I flicked through it and found that the 2000cc (4-cyl) engine had a code 'J'. Now, from my other detective work I know that the XY through to XC Falcons had the 'J' code for the 250 6-cyl low compression engine. Now I am confused myself!!!
