Varta Batteries - sold at Bunnings.. and maybe other places.

Hi all

You do get a lot of batteries for your spend.... much cheaper than Duracell etc

Mine don't seem to last. Even in low demand items like tv remotes.

I guess you get what you pay for.

Your experiences?

I purchased a pack of 30 for about $9.00. Even if they only last half that of bigger brands, I'm sure it still works out cheaper. How much is 30x Duracell AA?

You want rechargeable batteries.

Sanyo Eneloop batteries.

Full stop. By FAR the best battery you can get.

They actually do what they say they do, they are correctly rated and they bloody last near forever! I used the (2000) mAh ones and was blown away.

I think they have just made a higher rated one 2500 or 2600 (black ones) and they are better. I think they are made by Panasonic??

All my devices use AA or AAA batteries - I don't do battery packs for the very reason I can find myself in the middle of nowhere with no power and the only power source available will be the corner store selling disposable batteries.

I went on a 3 week holiday once - took well over 1000 pics and video with the screen on then realised that at 2.5 weeks I was still on the same 4 white AA Eneloop batteries.

Even the 'best' comparable rechargeable batteries would last 4-5 days at best.

I have seen Varta around - they are big in Europe I have noticed. Are they German??

It's funny isn't it, because Varta batteries used to have a very good reputation.

Back in the late 80s my old man worked on the (then) new PC-9/A aircraft for the RAAF as an avionics technician, and they were fitted with Varta batteries. They were considered to be the best around at the time, but you could not buy that brand anywhere in retail in this country back then.

Kind of reminds me of Bosch electric tools. They used to have a very good reputation (I still have my grandfather's hammer drill that he used in his manufacturing workshop, that was then passed to my father and then to me, so it has been used and abused over many years and shows no signs of carking it) but not so good any more.

Their Green series powertools are useless, especially the drill, two guys at work made the same mistake of buying those things.

Thats like Sidchrome, one of my workmates had their spanners from the 1970s, and they were nicely made, now their stuff is crap.

I found the Ikea batteries fantastic.

Everything from CR2032 to AAA to 9V

Cheap as chips as well

I find the Varta batteries are ok for what you pay from Bunnings, sure you will find better batteries but they will cost more!
The Varta batteries are ok for general use.

Bunnings used to sell Varta batteries that were gold and blue, and it was hard to kill them. They just lasted forever. Then they stopped selling those and now they are yellow and blue, supposedly Alkaline. These are a poor substitute, and I've kept an eye out for the gold ones to no avail.

And the big brands aren't all they are cracked up to be. Twice, Duracell batteries have failed and leaked in a device, and P&G take forever to settle the claim. Ironically, an original Macintosh from 1984 still had the original Energizer battery inside, and zero leakage...

Dick Smith had the 2000mAH ones on special today (Wednesday), $15 for an 8 pack.

I remember the gold and blue Varta. did the job and lasted.
These days I just stick to Duracell but tbh, I havent bought batteries in ages!

Anyone remember the rocket batteries from the 90s. These batteries literally were rockets and spewed their insides all over whatever they were fitted to. Always thought varta were in the same league and stayed away...

not the best. But the drawcard is they hold their charge on the shelf for a long time. The 'best' rechargables i have is the black & green duracells. Last a full 20 hours in my bluetooth portable speaker, whereas the eneloops i have only last around 12 hours. Having said that, the duracells only perform that well if theyve been freshly charged and lose it quickly sitting their, and that is why ive got about 50 enenloops do to everything that takes batteries in the house

keen to see how the more powerful ones perform that you were talking about

I buy Duracell or Energiser batteries on ebay very cheap.
I bought 2 x 9 volt smoke alarm Duracell batteries last week for $7.95 the pair delivered. (Arrived in 3 days)
It would have cost me the same amount in fuel to drive to Bunnings.

I even bought an energiser battery for my Citizen wrist watch a few weeks ago for only $2.99 inc delivery.

If they are white they will only be rated at 2000Mah I believe (mine are 6m up a tree in a time lapse camera and I swap then twice a month).

What are the Duracells rated at? 2500? 2600??

Certainly try the new Eneloop ones - They are black in colour and are rated at around 2500Mah. They will probably match the Duracells and will do so even after sitting around charged for months.

Careful with buying batteries online. Whilst I was in China I was shocked at the abundance of fake branded rechargeable batteries...

One clown even had AA batteries rated at something insane like 4800mah.

They were pretty good rip offs as well...

I should have taken note of the 9v battery I pulled out of our smoke alarm. We have been living here 5 years and it would go off on average once a month from cooking. After a few years I assumed that it was a hard wired unit till the better half calls me to say the alarm is beeping...

Low battery!
