My stepfather just got his first the other week... after 30 years.. basically unheard of. He was pretty shook up about it too. Then again considering some drivers are into double figures 1 is not too bad I guess. As for livestock and animals.... the worst he told me about was taking out a flock of emu's that ran into a tunnel infront of his train.... was a passenger train too! They actually had to stop the train before the next station and hose it off!!!! :

my girlfriends dad said while driving a freight train once out townsville way
a man was drunk and speeding with his wife in the car along side the tracks.. he overtook then drove straight over a level crossing without stopping.. the freight train obviously cant stop that quick and smashed into it.. killing the wife.. the man then proceeded to sue the company for what ever reason.. and they couldnt do a thing about it because the police never took a sample of his blood alcohol level.. so he got a nice fat pay out

My old man has been driving for just on 40 years (15 on track machines, 25 on Freight Trains) and hasn't had a single fatality. Unless you count Kangaroos which would be tens of thousands...
