I'm in the midst of installing heads and cam on my AUII XR8 (will document in a build thread shortly) and have a query re the position of the post on the cam syn.
I've done a heap of searching on our AFF forums and found out that the way to check/install the cam sync is to put the motor on TDC on the compression stroke and ensure the post sits in the middle of the gap on the sync. I'm still in diassembly mode and the cam is the next thing to come out, but thought I'd just check the cam sync before pulling it out. As you can see from the attached pic, it looks way off to the left, but as far as I'm aware the motor has been running fine. Do I just pull it out and make sure I line up the post better on the new cam sync when I install it? Or is every engine different and I should aim to line the post up like it is now. Apologies for the crappy quality of the pic.

Mine before I pulled the old one out.
And when I fitted a new one. The new one just sat off to the side slightly, the car runs fine like this with no issues and still gets great fuel economy.

Thanks for the reply Pete. Had a read through your other posts on the issue as well, very helpful. Cheers.

My suggestion would be if you don't have the alignment tool then mark the position of the outer body relative to the block, and the inner part mark that in relation to the outer body as well. That way everything should be back in the right spots.
Good work on tackling this yourself, which parts did you end up going with? |

http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11423749 I actually did what you said in relation to marking the position of the cam sync, as well as taking pics. The only thing I'm worried about is that I'm putting in a brand new one, as I've heard they can go within the kms that my ute has done, so though while I'm at it I'll replace that as well. Should that matter, or are they all the same? If I have any more queries I'll ask them in my build thread to avoid having two threads running.

With the cam sync is it possible to fix the squeeking in it or is it best to buy a new one?

As soon as I heard mine start to squeal, I threw some engine oil on top of it and let it soak overnight, then bolted the electronics back on top and has been good ever since (that's been 12 months or so now). The issue will be how long you've had the squeal going on as it would indicate the amount of wear your cam-sync bearings will have as to whether it would be better to replace it or not.

I took the sensor off the top of the syncroniser and put some oil down it. Will let it soak in for a while then give it go and see if the squeal is gone.

So far so good...no more squeaking now I've poured a little bit of oil into the cam sync.

Strattos, how did you go with the 'sewing machine' factor? Is it any noisier?
And what brand cam sync did you get? I had trouble with the 'Standard' brand flogging out and went back to Motorcraft. |

G'day Silver,
Haven't got the motor back together yet. Still waiting on pushrods, which were supposed to arrive today. Hopefully they'll get here today or tomorrow. If they do, I'll have it running on the weekend, so will let you know. Got the Motorcraft cam sync from Rock Auto.

Don't know if I'm imagining it or something but ever since I fixed my cam syncroniser my ute has become even better to drive. So much smoother and more power. And whats more it only took a few minutes and didn't cost me a cent.
