Why? It's one weekend out of 52. Surely one day less isn't going to hurt anyone particularly to show thanks to those who served or serve. It's not as though people who would normally have Saturday off didn't.

The Public holiday will always fall on the 25th of April regardless if it is a Saturday or Sunday. The reason we don't get it on the Friday or Monday (to make a long weekend) is if that was the case many people would use it as a reason to get away for the weekend and not be in a position to attend ANZAC day ceremonies.
