Default Dont use E10 fuel!

My BF would'nt start today after heaps of cranking.

Mechanic suggested fuel pump was faulty.

Tow truck cost me $300 to get car to my mechanic on my side on town.

Dropped car off at 3pm and by 5pm he called me back and said it was fixed.

It was a bad batch of E10 fuel.

Mechanic cost me $150.

SO thats $450 just today all because of ****** E10 fuel.

He said he's had about 6 cars with bad fuel in the last month.

DON"T USE IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Out of interest, when buying a car is there any way of knowing whether they have been using e10?

With a written statement from the mechanic and the invoices from the tow company can you approach the service station or an authority to have this sorted?

No way of knowing, AT ALL. I dont think it actually does any damage to the engine internally its just all the fuel pump and fuel lines that it effects.

And apparently the Ethanol seperates from the petrol in the tank when the car sits for a while so you end up running on ethanol only.

When you say "bad batch of E10" what exactly do you mean?

It may have been a bit higher than 10% ethanol going by the symptoms. As E10 absorbs water, it sounds like a richer batch has sucked all the moisture out of your tank and pumped it into your engine. Your mechanic has probably drained your fuel system and purged the injectors, got some actual petrol in there and got your car going again.

As for recourse and recompense, make sure you have your receipt, you can lodge a claim with the fuel company.

I've run all my cars(and bikes) exclusively on E10 for the last 12 years with no issues whatsoever.
You can get contaminated fuel whether it's E10 or straight unleaded.
Just sounds like more E10 scaremongering to me.
Just sayin!

yup. you can't even buy plain old petrol in Europe any more. nothing wrong with E10 if the car is designed for it.

Poo creek without a paddle springs to mind. Bank statement might help if you used plastic to pay for the fuel.

Probably took him 2 minutes to change the fuse, but waited a couple of hour to make the phone call...easier to justify the 150 that way.

Nothing wrong with e10, as pointed out earlier, you can get a a dodgy batch of fuel no matter what you use.

I run my Bf GT on E10 all the time, runs like a dream, starts easy, fuel economy is not too bad, heaps of power. Way cheaper than 95 octane, excellent as far as I'm concerned.

I would suggest that you have been getting bad/water contaminated fuel prior to using the E10 and the E10 has cleaned out all the gunk and flushed it through your fuel system.

So now you're going to join a roadside assistance company for next time, right ?

You didn't fill up whilst the Tanker was dropping fuel did you ?

Someone explain to me how you can flush a bad batch of fuel from a BF in under two hours, put good fuel in and only charge $150.

They'd charge 50 bucks just for a fuel filter, or didn't change the fuel filter. But fuel filter would be the first thing to be changed if a bad batch of fuel was present.

Didn't keep a sample of this crook fuel by any chance? If you're planning on getting any compensation you'll need evidence.

No they did'nt keep any samples.

I'm a memeber of RACV but when i rang them to organise a tow truck they said they would only take the car back to the local depot.

The car needed to be taken to the workshop which was an hour away.

I have premium RACV roadside assistance.

Lately i just asked them to tow it 100k's (YES 100km!!)

Just cause I suspected it needed a new fuel injector and that is my preferred workshop....they happily obliged.

Very, very good value that RACV product.

Also...It covers me for whatever car I am driving at the time

"A bad batch of E10" is ALL of the stuff on sale if you have an older car. The list of vehicles that simply cannot use it is staggering. In tha manual my 2008 Suzuki motorbike says not to use it, my mothers 1996 Mazda 121 says not to use it either. Lots of new/old cars either just plain cannot use it or are "not recommended" to use it. However the green mob seems to think it's a fix-all and should be mandated.

So...what do people with older cars that cannot use it do on that glorious green day it is mandated in all fuel?

Not to mention the way it makes your car get worse fuel economy...something mentioned in all the paperwork you get from service stations about the wonder fuel.
Never had it explained to me exactly how deliberately making your car get worse economy is better for the environment...

Being in NSW I don't know about this 'local depot' idea.
However my roadside assistance is with my insurance company, which includes a tow (as that's all the 'roadside assistance' you seem to get these days) to any garage of my choosing.

Must be a lot of ethanol that is separated from petrol in those tanks at Petrol Stations.

I think some one is telling you porkies!!!

as long as your fuel economy degrades by less than 10% you are still using less petrol.

I was about to mention the same thing....bad economy. My G6 gets terrible economy on any of those ethanol fuels. Putting 98 back in it has seen the economy improve drastically. I was starting to think my wife was either sneaking off to the drags with it or a sensor had gone bung. No more ethanol for me thanks.... I'm no expert but my car doesn't like the stuff no matter what they say.

I was getting under high 12s before ethanol.....but using it hovered it around 15. That's a big change.

E10 is fine

I would've thought that the ethanol on it has possibly dislodged some gunk in the petrol tank causing fuel filter to be clogged

Compensation? No

I ran a VE SS ute on e10 for 5 years, 252000km with zero fuel related issues. Early on I ran a few tanks of 98, 95 and 91 before settling on e10.

There are too many jumping on the "e10 is bad" bandwagon. These are the same people who believe the earth is flat.
