Default EL Auto Gearbox for AU?

Hi guys,

Was told that the EF/L and AU auto boxes are essentially the same.

They are a straight swap over for size etc right? The shifts are different though from what I understand. The AU's got different points and 3rd locks out, then shifts into 4th and locks out again. All for economy.

If that's actually the case, would a box from an EL that's in good nick be better?

I do know that they have the transmission oil filler also.

I'm thinking about a swap over for about $350.

Your thoughts please.

GK

The dipstick tube can be retrofitted to the AU gear box. I've had mine done.
Is there a problem with your AU gearbox?

GK - for reference, the gearbox filler tube stopped after EF Series I. No EL's had them.

Yeah, it's a bit clunky on some changes. I need to get it looked at, but money is pretty tight this time of year! LOL!

If it is clunky, it sounds like solenoid issue. When was the gear box last serviced??

clunky into second is an s5 solenoid fault the only if you swap to an el trans it wont work any different than your trans unless you change the trans computer to an el one

Earlier this year, but only a fluid and filter change, no work on the solenoids.

GK, when you say it's clunky is it sloppy on down shifts but fine on upshifts? Mine has become a bit sloppy and clunky over the last few months and I had assumed that it was becuase the poor thing had never had an auto service.

Just recently had it done though and it was found to be in good health. Mechanic did mention something about a solenoid though so next service will be looking into this.

Would definitely be worth your time looking at the solenoid compared to a changeover though - fairly considerable price difference!

You are right! Downshifts are the issue, usually 2nd to 1st, but 3rd to second can be dodgy too.

Sounds exactly like mine then! Slow corners where it kicks down to 1st or 2nd are very jolty!

Why did you make the change? A cheaper cost option that an AU unit, or other reasons?

How do you find it?

I just had the gearbox serviced on my 1999 AU and was told by the mechanic that it had a 1995 gearbox fitted to it complete with dipstick, as most of you know my car has a shudder when slowing down which looks to be a Torque converter on its way out but apart from that the gearbox suits the car with plenty of power.
Cheers Tony

In a word, Yes. Straight swap out, no difference whatsoever.

Thought i might throw in a thought, (not sure if 100% Relevant or not though.) but you might have to change the extension case on the rear of the gearbox, the transmission mount bracket, and maybe the bellhousing.

I Swapped out my AU1 Wagon box for a EF Sedan one. had to change the bellhousing (different bolt pattern), extension case (Length was shorter on the sedan) and extension case bracket (black metal part) for it to fit correctly.
