Default Australia Post experience

Had a card left by Australia Post at the address I am at today.
This is not my permanent address though, and even though over the past few years my drivers licence has been enough to have the parcel/letter handed over today it wasn't, they require something with THAT ADDRESS on it The fact it is addressed to me is irrelevant (no, my name isn't SMITH, I am one of three in this country)

The card had no description of what was to be collected marked on the back, and they wouldn't give me the card back so I could reference the tracking number on the front.......
So in true form I rang "complaints" !

This is the bit I found interesting.

They deliver to an address, not a person

Basically anyone in your front yard or who answers your door can accept anything !
So if you ever get anything sent to yourself at a relatives address whist you are visiting on holidays you will NOT be allowed to collect it !
I am sure this comes down to the "customer service representative" on the day .....................
I am not going to change my licence to an address that is not my registered address just to receive something that I have no idea what it is ! (probably a 10yo parking fine from the Sheriffs dept )

To update

Turns out the parcel was sent registered post, so needed a signature.

So at 4:55, less than an hour later I had a "resident" of the address at the same post office, the different clerk managed to track down the parcel and happily handed it over

Not to me, a 6ft male but to a 5ft female with no ID to say she was the intended recipient (I waited outside as I was ready to "make a scene"!)

Further more the parcel took same finding as "miss prim and proper from India *****" had marked it as return to sender, REFUSED BECAUSE no ID PRESENTED

WTF, my drivers licence doesn't count as ID

So Boys & Girls, next time you are ordering your Porn, Drugs or Electric personal TOYS just keep in mind that anyone at or in your property could be VERY surprised and leave you VERY embarrassed

I have never had Australia Post ask for proof of my address. My licence address has been different from my postal address for the last 10 years. I get parcels all the time, and get my wife to collect them for me when i am away. I have never had an issue with getting my parcels no matter where they get delivered, ever.

I guess you just got a super cranky lady or something.

I reckon that is OK. For all they know there may be another bloke with the same surname living at that address so how do you know it was for you? - and then there was one .... I dont think any of them own a crystal ball to work out who you are and why you dont live there or why you dont have ID for that address or even why someone sent something to someone at that address. But it must have been important to require proof of ID seeing no one was available to man the front yard on the off chance that Aust Post may deliver something.. Anyway, if it is that important, they will return the letter to the original poster and let them worry about how to get in touch with you.

Look at it from there side. They are only doing there job.

My understanding is that because it is an item from overseas that someone had to sign for it (so that the federal police can ping someone IF it turns out to of been an illegal item/import )

The point is "as stated by the call centre" that Aust Post duty is in delivery to the address, not for the person whom posted/paid or whom it is addressed

What ever happened to the laws that once governed the "queens" mail as it was.............

Also, what are the chances that a person with the same name as myself is going to get the card from under the front door of a residence that is not my regular address and then show up to the post office with ID

See BENT_8 thread of identity theft, it is easy enough to do over the phone, even finding someone with the same name as you isn't that hard really, but checking their mail every day in the hope of scoring a CD or cheque ?????

This is not about ID theft is it? I thought it was about retrieving something that was to be delivered to a certain address

So true, had a couple of years back where a post contractor supposedly dropped off a consignment of wine to our business . Knew nothing about it until the business next door and said contractor turn up wanting to know it's whereabouts .WTF are you on about , after being threatened with police involvement I got my back up . Who signed for it etc. No signature taken but he described a casual we had working on the day as the one that accepted delivery .Ho hum what do you think I can do about that SFA . You can't have it both ways and the responsibility belongs to the person that releases it to have PROOF, my dog could sign for it as far as some of these jokers go, as long as they have a squiggle on their ubeaut tech device they don't give a rats, job is done .
Registered mail is a different kettle of fish, they require i.d regardless of whether you happen to be home or collecting from p.o . At least that is the law .

What I HATE when dealing with bureaucracies is that the response is entirely dependent on which which person serves you, and whilst some want to help you and do their job, others seem to take a perverse delight in looking for any excuse not to, and what's worse invent utterly ILLOGICAL reasons why they can't

I had to take all my paperwork in get my Terri registered in WA. Because it came from interstate, there was no signed WA transfer form, but I had the contract, proof of payment, emailed receipts, etc, etc.
The first lady checked it all, said it was fine, but then I found out That I needed to remove the SA plates and surrender them on the spot. Went out and did that, but then had to go to a different window (ticket system) when I came back. This stupid cow informed that I can't register the car because my proof of purchase is insufficient.
So basically she saying that the government of WA would rather I NOT register the car in WA!?!
Anyway, I patiently took her through the documentation again; contract, proof of payment, acknowledgement of receipt. She claims this isn't enough because the contract itself didn't say that I had paid (why would it?) Even ignoring the absurdity of this, what is she suggesting? That I contracted to buy a car, never paid, and they shipped it to me anyway??? FMD
I explained that a contract is a contract, not a receipt, and again showed her the transfer and acknowledgement which stated "we have received your money, will deliver the car on Monday."
Nup, she was having none of it, and kept pushing my papers back at me. So I refused to move, and demanded to know what exactly WOULD be acceptable to them? So after consulting they decided that they wanted an email from the car-yard (of which I already had several) sent directly to them. SO I said "ok, you want me to go home and send you an email." She says "no no, it must come from the yard," and I said "that's right, I'll go home and send you an email 'from the car-yard'." I was going to do exactly that, but as I was leaving noticed that the first lady was available so I trotted across to her.
I full explained exactly what had happened with the second lady, but she disagreed and went to the manager and got it all sorted. We're just finalising the payment when ole b-face comes storming across "that's already been rejected, its been rejected." Since I had already told the helpful lady that, and she has sorted it with the manager, bf was left looking rather stupid.

I had a similar issue recently with a parcel delivered to our business - didn't want to hand it over because no ID with that address - well its a business no one has id with that address!!

Even then it should have never gone to the post office as they said it couldn't be delivered but we were there the whole time.

Move to the country. My PO know me by first name. If my Dad drops in they give him my parcels and vice versa. Its good being part of a community.

Wait until you have to sort out a will ( not wishing this on anyone ) .Cancelling insurance on car and house and contents, transferring rego and title of vehicle , all the stuff that your solicitor doesn't do, it is a bloody nightmare especially when you are dealing with o/seas call centres ( took me awhile to work this out after all they all sound the same ) . Contact 1 advises that you need such and such. Contact 2 is a different story . About the easiest to cancel is c/link ( I wonder why ) .
It has given me a heads up of which insurance companies NOT to deal with . One took 6 weeks ( and a few phone calls ) to issue a pro rata cheque, another 5 days .
