Default Towbar

I just got a quote for a towbar on an ecoboost Mondeo. Towbar guy told me I would need to get the car reprogrammed after the bar was fitted. Anyone know anything about this? What's it for?

Cheers.

Some models have rear sensors for parking.
When you fit a towbar, and are towing a trailer/caravan, you have something close behind you all the time. The sensor needs to be deactivated when a trailer is connected (electrical plug). Don't know what they do, but it stops it beeping at you.

nailed it in one Allan

The system needs to have the towing capability enabled, to stop exactly what you said.

You can do it yourself but you'd need hardware and a bit of nous to do it:
Modified ELM
Laptop
Forscan program

edit: Hmm ecoboost meaning the latest,

CAUTION: might pay to just get the Dealership to do it, I'd hate the think hardware were bought and it couldn't access it. Always a small chance. Eco boost seems to be supported up to 2011, ymmv.

Cheers you guys. I would never try this sort of thing myself. Ford dealer is the way to go.

Mine came with a Hayman Reese towbar already on it.
It does set off the rear sensors when you are reversing with a trailer on but it doesn't really bother me, I just reach out and press the button to turn it off, no biggie. You tend to avoid reversing when you have the trailer on anyway. When we take out our camper I reverse it once at the destination and once when we get home to put it back in the yard.
