Default i30 v 3 v Focus

My Daughter has a on older Ford Focus, and has loved it. She's in the market for a new car, and initially wanted another Focus. Much as it breaks my heart, I have steered her away from Ford, because of concerns over the Power-**** tranny.

So we're looking at an i30, maybe a Mazda 3.
Anyone bought one within the last couple of years? Any points to note between them?

With the Hyundai, is it worth paying for the 2.0l direct injected model?

Thought the 2015 Focus changed the trans.

http://www.wheelsmag.com.au/news/1507/why-the-2015-ford-focus-costs-$3100-more

Quote:
However, what Ford should be shouting from the rooftops (but isn’t, strangely) is the fact that the Trend automatic that is expected to snare more than one-in-two 2016 Focus buyers now costs just $100 more than before despite the big equipment hike, thanks to a switch from the old Getrag-designed Powershift six-speed dual-clutch transmission to a more conventional six-speed torque-converter unit. Going auto now adds only $1000 rather than $2200 to the bottom line.

The 2016 Model Focus looks to be a big improvement.
Another review here. It seems to be highly rated.

the Focus is made in Thailand while the 3 is made in Japan
and the Focus (in base model) has the 1.6l fiesta engine
i wouldn't even consider the focus no matter how blue blooded i am
and the i30 is made in the czech republic.

Hyundai salesman said that the 2.0L is a waste of time over the standard 1.8L.
My missus was looking At Mazda 3 and i30. One of the main reasons she picked the i30 is because it doesn't have stop start. Plus I think the base i30 has more standard features than the base 3

The new Focus has a regular automatic and a 1.5lt engine. Honestly out of the two, from personal experience it'd be a flip of the coin decision between the 3 and the Focus. The Hyundai looks good but you can tell it's cheap compared with the other two.

Hey Dazz

Sorry for butting in with a sales pitch, but I'm in Perth (SOR) and I have a 2012 i30 for sale if you're interested. Very low km (just clicked over 5,500) and balance of 5 year new car warranty (>2 years remaining). It's the base model GD Active with the 1.8L petrol engine, and it's a 6 speed manual. PM me if you're interested and I'll send you more details.

Getting back on topic, the only comparison I have for you is to a 2011 base model Focus with the 1.6L petrol. It was okay to drive but the 1.6L was gutless compared to the 1.8L in the i30.

The new LZ Focus has the same 1.5L EcoBoost as the Kuga and a conventional (converter) 6 speed auto.

It is a pretty significant upgrade over the LW2 series.

I'm not sure if her current Focus is the 2.0l or the 1.8, but either way yeah the 1.6 looks a little undersized. If looking at the current Focus I think I'd be looking for a 2.0l. The new model will apparently only come with a 1.5 EB, however they are also nixxing the entry level model.

NB: Daughter lives in Canberra, so I am relegated to just advising and browsing online. Also, whilst I don;t know what the rules are in the ACT, she has only ever driven an auto.

Who cares where it's made. It's a Ford, that's all that matters. And they have made significant improvements with the LZ over the previous model.

Focus v 3 v i30 - I'd choose the Focus without any hesitation.

Thats how I would of voted also for an 'auto' , however with the new upgrades its now the Focus (new auto and engine) with a decent lead over the Mazda with the Hyundai a close 3rd.

I30 5dr is made in Korea, the 3Dr and Wagon are Czech made with the 1.6 GDI.
Hyundai are cracking along with free auto at the moment, spoke to a dealer the other day, he is finding out if HYU AU are extending the auto offer for sept, looking at an accent for my mum.

Dont overlook the Cerato. Despite the KIA badge its a great bit of kit. Drives nice, lots of toys and 7 year unlimited w/tee with roadside assist.

Unless its changed with the recent update, only the i30 Tourer and 3 door are made in Czech republic. Hatch is made in Asia somewhere...

If OP is talking brand new, I reckon the Mazda 3 is the go.. I had a 2014 Hyundai i30 Tourer Diesel as a work car for about 8 months before I left the company and It was a good little car but I also test drove the latest Mazda 3 in both Diesel (Astina XD) and 2.5 petrol (SP25) and was suitably impressed... Cant comment on the 2 litre Neo/Maxx/Touring with regards to engines but Looks, interior and driving where well above the Hyundai. Depending on her budged, if she can stretch the normal SP25 is a good buy and goes really well...

I'd be suggesting your daughter wait until the new focus is released if she can, as it should be a cracker of a car with the new transmission and ecoboost engine.

My better half had to make this decision and chose the I30. She does not regret the decision, now with 35K on clock and trouble free very enjoyable ownership. It has a great 6 speed auto, very well built, pleasure to be in and does everything well. It's petrol hatch which I believe was built in Sth Korea. I never thought I'd ever own a Hyundai, but there you are.

Drove a new model turbo diesel auto Focus the other day, wasn't that impressed until I selected sports mode, chalk and cheese.
My Mrs has a 2008 BK Mazda 3, and my Mum has the latest model Mazda 3.
I would not go past the Mazda in this class, better finish, heaps better resale, and a much nicer ride.

The I30 trumps the Focus for resale if you find that important. Don't know about how the 3 compares.

My vote is for the I30.
