"While Toyota may be well represented in the sedan market here in America by the likes of the Camry and Avalon, back home in Japan it's all about the Crown. First introduced way back in 1955, Toyota's flagship domestic model celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion and prepare it for its seventh decade of production, the Japanese automaker has treated the Crown to a mid-cycle update.

A range of updates distinguish the face-lifted Toyota Crown. It benefits from a new direct-injection turbo engine, a host of new color choices, and a new suite of electronic systems. Available in an assortment of trim levels, most of the improvements have been visited on the Athlete and Royal models, but the Majesta also gets some revisions. The Crown Athlete, for example, gets a mesh grille extending deep into the bumper, flanked by LED headlamps and larger tail lights. The Athlete's interior gets new trim, too. Meanwhile the updated Crown Royal – not to be confused with the Canadian whiskey of the same name – gets a horizontal chrome grille treatment, with new fog lamps and a wood-trimmed interior.

The 2.0-liter turbo four has been tuned for low- and medium-range punch, with a twin-scroll turbocharger fed by adaptive intake cooling and intelligent variable valve timing. There are 2.5- and 3.5-liter naturally aspirated engines as well as a hybrid option, available in rear- or all-wheel drive, and channeled through 6- or 8-speed automatic transmissions. Finally there's an array of new technologies packed inside the new Crown, including right-turn collision, warning, red-light, and traffic signal warning systems, along with radar-enabled cruise control, emergency vehicle warning, blind-spot monitor and intelligent parking assist. I recently saw a 1970s Crown at a local carpark. They were assembled by AMI here in Australia. It was pretty a big and imposing car I reckon, like this one:

Not a bad looking car the early crowns as above,.............. the newey to me looks a bit understated exterior wise for a flagship ? perhaps the pic doesn't do it justice ? i like the interior though, love the color of the woodgrain.

Toyota is developing an 86-based four-door sedan. If they enlarge the chassis (wheelbase and width), give it more of a formal body and put in an advanced V8, I wonder how Aussies would take to it with its apparently superb handling tuned to match this. A wagon is also said to be in the works.

Gee thay havent done much to the exterior of the 60th anniversary Crown compared to the current one. Slightly different grill and headlight configuration and grill treatment. Thats it.

I see these things everywhere here in China. Not a bad looking boat, but I still cant for the life of me see why anyone would take this thing over an equivalent Merc or BMW! Prices aren't that much difference either.

Also Toyota refuses to roll out model recalls here as well. Even if the rest of the world has a particular build issue, Toyota China will categorically not honour a recall.

I did some wiring work on my neighbors 1960s Toyota Crown.

3sp on the tree with overdrive that can be engaged on 2nd or 3rd.

It cuts ignition for a split second to engage smoothly.

I like the late 1990s/00s Toyota Crown.

i had squiz a few months ago through lexus in the city while i was going for parts for my old beast, also had a sit in LS600 current model(very nice) and a few others , very depressing getting back into the old banger after getting into some of the new luxo barges ,

they had an LFA there as well but wouldnt let me sit it, ............. note to self ..... when supa comes in not buying from lexus elizabeth st city .

Toyota Crown is Toyotas longest running nameplate. Now in 14th generation . Car mostly intended for Japan and other Asian markets. Series 11'and 12 are available in Oz as Grey imports (s170 and s180) . I ve driven s170 crown and majesta with 1JZ and Uzfe - they are very similar in feel to LS400 and share switchgear , interior bits and pieces ,mechanicals. They get lots of electronic gizmos not offered to export markets .

About 30,000 rmb which is about 6,000 aud.

I bought the sporty version for a few reasons.
1 because I thought it would be comparable quality wise. My sig gives you an idea how that turned out...
2 that because if my 2m height I could fit better than either 3 series or 5 series
3 second hand the price difference balloons significantly as BMWs in particular hold their values much better on the second hand market.
4. Mercs in my price range were too small.
5. To buy new I would have had to sell my Typhoon in Australia. So not worth it.

I regret the Toyota (as you can read) but can't change now due to the Aussie dollar being far weaker now! I would have lived with the cramped driving position of the 5 series if I was to do it again.

As my sig says it's a '06 model. The '13 model is a good looking car. But they are basically the same as mine I'm told. In fact the local Toyota dealer I've gotten to know says the pre '10 model is better built. From '10 they are built in China.
