Ive had adaptive shift in 3 other au xr6's and it was never as invasive and annoying as is in my xr8 ute. It kicks in too late and lingers too long and the shifts are worryingly hard. IS there an easy way to disable?

I've got mine in performance mode, took a while to get used to it, but love it now. Maybe yours is in economy now. Do a AFF search & type in au adaptive shift, pick a thread & learn how to program your shift. See how you go, good luck!
Ps. Sounds like the transmission needs a service though. cheer's, Maka
