Most of the vehicles in the Aussie top ten will still be running in 10 years time, the ones on the Euro list will be all on the scrap heap as they cost too much to fix.

Actually they're quite cheap to fix in Europe, just as I imagine an Australian car would be quite expensive to fix in Europe. Huge local networks support cars in their country/continent of origin, I imagine that's the same all over the world.

As I pointed out earlier, most cars sold in Europe are made in Europe and people keep coming back and buying them over again. The (allegedly) more reliable Asian cars are not high in the sales charts there. Tells you something.

European cars are becoming cheaper to look after here too as specialist independent mechanics are able to source information and parts cheaply by the internet and international networking.

average age of cars in the UK rose to 7.7 years.similar to that of Sydney/melb CBD. due to the recession it rose and is now falling.

average age in Australia was 10.1.
average age in US is 11.5.

their are around 200 holdens listed as road licenced--most have small capacity engines. there are 9 000 short wheel base ser 3 landrovers listed.
and similar number listed as not in use.

"They all do that"

"That is the way they are supposed to be"

"Nah, mate they don't make the XR8 anymore, you should be getting yourself into a Mondeo"

Top selling cars are a lot like top selling hamburgers, Big Mac, Whopper, Quarter Pounders...

Sure they sell, but these cars are the "built to a budget" hamburgers of the auto world. Big Macs do serve a purpose but living off them day after day does not improve your life, likewise for these "top selling cars".

It's quite funny too a lot of the Brits that are lucky enough to have a "garage", it's not actually big enough to put a car in. I don't think I could handle living in those squalid damp little houses

Anyone in Seppoland would probably say the same thing about our top 10 selling cars.

We'll I have to totally disagree with that analogy as I currently own a fiesta Eco sports and a Focus ST and find them very nice to drive. My only complaint is what to trade the ST on next year, a Mustang, Focus RS or the XR6T Sprint.
As for comparing a Ford to a Big Mac same on you as that's just wrong now go and wash your mouth.

They hardly sell a lot of those in the UK. Proportionally Australia buys a lot more of those. Australia is one of the largest markets in the world for VW GTIs and RenaultSport.

Anything warm in the UK has insanely expensive insurance.

Their's isn't much better. Filled with Japanese sedans and small SUVs. With three American pick ups taking the top places.

So they sell twice the amount as us, but I'm sure it's easier for them to export vehicles to the rest of Europe since it's so close. Nothing like where we are located.

Yes I am aware they are globally imported platforms and have been here for a while

Mondeo - imported in 1990s, failed
Taurus - imported in 1990s, failed
Fiesta - dominates overseas, very low sales here
Focus - dominates model sales globally, very low sales here, sales crash from 2013 on
Mondeo - new model but sales not igniting, very low sales level

Sold through an extensive dealer network

For SUVs, for sure, going well. Passenger (low level) vehicles is what I'm referring to. Their sales here should be a lot better. There's always an excuse and it's sure to follow...

Does the UK do displacement-based insurance costs? I know small cars dominate in a lot of euro countries because they pay more the bigger the engine.

Top selling Fiestas strengths are fun to drive , economical and safe supermini car. Apparently build quality and reliability not first class. It seems UK market favours fun to drive factor higher than Australian market.

Difficult to compare the UK and Australian markets due to the way taxes work.

- taxes based on CO2 output - so small engines and small cars rule and a higher level of diesels

- the tax and therefore price of fuel is different - diesel is apparently much cheaper

- more diesels mean the Japanese brands don't get a look in versus a solid history of better performing diesels from others

- a large car in densely populated cities is more of a luxury than v practical

- insurance plays a part too

But a good crystal ball to the future ~ 10yrs?

Surely the government will need to revise luxury car tax, won't want to give up the revenue, will want to look green and would introduce an emissions based pricing model?

crystal ball

News radio today, GM announced in USA a partnership to construct a short term hire and self driving rental car system.

Ford and google have already announced their plans and other companies likewise.

They plan to turn away from privately purchased vehicles as they see the need in cities for people that don't have need to own a vehicle.

Plenty of SUVs that suit that task even better. THAT's why we are losing the Falcadore.

The UK's biggest export is car manufacturing so there must a lot of models built there, of those named in there top 10 I know the Nissan Qashqai (no:5) was designed and it built in the UK what about the other models?
