Default Register home built caravans first time in south australia

Hi

Questions are about south australia

Wanting to know can anyone please list the steps to registering a new homemade caravan in south australia from scratch from start to finish (apply for vin all way to rego)

Also to register as a caravan does kitchen and beds and all stuff have to be fitted out as well as shell being built ontop of chassis or can you present it as just a body on chassis with windows to be registered as a caravan.

If anyone on here could list all steps to registering from scratch in detail that'd be great

Thanks for any help

Make it as simple as you can ie- build it as a trailer. Ring up service SA for a VIN, and get an authorised person to check it over and complete the relevant sheet, then go in and register it. The same sheet is used for a trailer or caravan, but the less it is, the less they can fault it. Then take your trailer home and build the caravan atop it. After all, theres not a huge difference between an enclosed trailer and a caravan.

Can you just change trailer to caravan on form that you fill out to change details

Is it build to vsb then get a vin then get it weighed then a id check then go register it

Except for lighting, LPG, Air/con etc which have their own rules.

Phone regency park, they are public servants and need to be treated with respect, do that ask intelligent questions and Iam sure you will get answers.
A lot of people hate them because they rule what can and can't be done. Id rather that than anyone who wanted to could build, redesign whatever they wanted and put it on the roads. Imagine a home built custom car coming towards you and suddenly falling apart.

Also, wouldn't weights come into play?

I assume they put a weight on the plate? Would be quite a difference between a shell and a fully kitted out finished unit.

Correct, caravan has to have weights, tare, GTM, ATM, GCM, towball weight etc, consult your local RTA for advise.

South Australia will be different but the best bet is to get as much information from Australian Design Standards, as I know a lot has changed from when I built my own two motorhomes, one in NSW and the other in Vic.
ADS /ADR is nationwide though. ADR 44/00 is worth downloading. Applies to caravans and RV's.
If you plan any 240v electrics, you can install your own flex tinned core wiring but the final connections need to be done by a licenced electrician which will be checked by the electrical commission in your state.

ADS has some really goofy laws regarding door /window openings, electrical and gas installations. ie. height from the ground, exact location of electrical plug input, throw switches, type of throw switches etc. gas is worst with solid copper mounted lines, flex only at bottle and appliance.

1st motorhome (NSW) I built, I needed blue slip ID change, pink slip, weighbridge, electricity commission slip, gas compliance papers.

There is a ID plate now from the RVMAA as well which states compliancy.

I would imagine it will have to be fully completed inside before its (Tare, GVM weighbridge) ticket registered as a caravan.
it is a heap lest hassle if you can build it with 12v / solar only.

Good luck with it.

Had a friend get a 13 x 6 (or something around that size), enclosed furniture trailer. Always just been registered as such, but he has converted with beds and small kitchen up front, and enclosed area at back for motor bike and other camping gear storage. I dont yhink anyone has ever asked why he has a solar panel on a furniture van.
