Just wondering if anyone can clarify what the fuel tank capacity on an MC Zetec would be?
Reason I ask is that I thought I read somewhere it was 55 litre. The other day I was filling up, guage somewhere between empty & quarter (more towards the empty side) - I filled up and it took 56 point something litre.

The other problem is the more you put in, the more it costs $$$...
Almost $100 last night to fill up.

Sorry to excavate an old thread.
Yesterday I filled up at Costco in Fyshwick and whilst being dazzled by the price (97.7) I managed to put in 71 litres. I had done about 1100km and the fuel gauge was still at around 1/8 mark. This gave me average of around 6.5l/100 which is more than my normal 6.3l/100. Anyone else managed to put in more than the tank capacity or have I been the victim of a dodgy fuel pump? |

Bundy, you have a 75 litre tank!
wouldn't recommend running it down that low, either.

I was of the impression they were 70l. I commute about 200km per day so running the tank down low is a fairly common occurrence. I also do my own servicing so I will be changing the fuel filter a lot more often than the recommended 60,000km. After having to have a common rail fuel pump replaced years ago on my Terracan, I have been very particular about regular fuel filter changes. I used to do them every 15,000 in the Terracan at $170 per filter. I have only refilled this one 3 times so far and this is the first time I got above 1000km. It will be interesting to see how it goes over the next month in comparison. |

User manual recommends not to put in any more after the second click, elsewhere I've read you should stop at the first click. Manual mentions expansion space in the tank and there is also the volume going up the fuel filler neck. Is it possible overfilling into those spaces could add up to the extra? Either way something seems screwy. If your gauge was at exactly 1/8 you should still have had 8-9L onboard... It would seem either your gauge is out (you were running on fumes), or their pump is very wrong... |

Pumps being mechanical devices may develop faults?

After some quick reading it seems unlikely that the bowser should be inaccurate, they get checked regularly by the operators and regulators and I imagine the penalties would be steep.
http://www.caltex.com.au/LatestNews/....aspx?ID=13454 If you think the servo's pump is inaccurate you can report it. http://www.measurement.gov.au/Pages/...the-Truth.aspx Expansion space is apparently minimum 5%, so a tank designed to hold (say) 70L must do so at a maximum 95% capacity and will actually be a 78.95L (or more) tank. http://mechanics.stackexchange.com/q...les-vent-trick |

I've managed to get get more than 70 litres in the tank a few times. You have to be careful not to overfill, as the overflow ends up on the ground by the back wheel.

I have had Costco bowsers continue to pump until its running out the top of the filler before cutting out so it could be that. I would be surprised if the bowsers were in-accurate. I was just surprised as I expected to put in 66-68 litres based on distance and avg fuel consumption. On a side note, the fuel light came on with DTE of about 145km. Is this what others experience? I did travel about 80km before filling so maybe I was running on fumes. At least I know how far I can go. |

Last time, it came on at around 100km DTE, then went out, and then came back on again later. For what it's worth, the manual says it illuminates when you reach 80km DTE, calculated from your consumption rate so I dunno why it should come on at any other figure! |

The DTE is not to be relied on. It can go from say 50 km to 0 very quickly. I fill up before the gauge gets to the E mark and ignore the DTE.

What I cant understand is the gauge was still showing about 1/8 tank when I filled it. I haven't run it down that far before (only filled 3 times so far) so still learning it. I think I may have filled to the brim as I have done well over 300km since and still above 3/4 tank

That does seem unusual. The times I've seen more than 70 l go in, the gauge has been on or just above E.
