Why don't most car makers install an engine bay light?

You slide it along to check the fuses are ok - lights OK fuse good, no light - replace... I thought that was a pretty cool thing...

My mums Datsun 240Z had one - but it was fixed...didn't make much sense to me. I would have had it on a lead that would reach the front.

Always wondered why nobody invented wheel-well lights to aid in tyre replacements at night. It's not always a puncture occurs in a well lit area at night, especially for those who travel to remote areas.

Ahh, wise you are. A headlamp is like a light that follows your thoughts.. or at least your head movements. Heaps better then a torch in your mouth (no Maglites thanks). Unless you roll in a car that needs some tlc or cannot afford to make it reliable, or are nocturnal, under Bonnet lighting is not required. Sticky back led strips that are 12v voltage controlled aren't hard to get, and if you wire them to the interior lights (leave a door open) will do the trick. I did that to light the back of my old work van because the old light was useless

I would be happy with an illuminated light ring around the ignition barrel on the BT50 and I assume Ranger before they did an Engine Bay light.

I fitted some back in 07' for the standing around in the car park with my bonnet open at night look at my e-wang crowd .

LED strips from Jaycar wired into my foglight switch so turn the parkers on at least and presto engine bay light's

Then again... Why has no one invented or brought to market a jack with built in torch / lantern or a wheel brace with built in torch

My GMC Sierra had an engine bay light and so does one of my customers RAM 2500.

Makes sense, there are parts of north America in locations such as Barrow which can receive up to 67 days of total darkness in the year... No daylight!

An engine bay light is quite practical in these parts of the world

Thie is the most logical thing ive heard of. I cant believe the marketers havent even tried this as a gimmick. I mean.....weve seen every other lame trick to sell cars.

There are a number of reasons why a torch is needed. Wheel well lights ? How long would these last with mud and rocks hitting them ? A LED torch and spare batteries is the go, head lamp or normal. A trouble lamp wont work if a battery lead comes off, or a fault take out a fuse. How about the trailer you borrowed / rented, when the wheel comes off at night, how will you find the wheel ? ( true story, thanks U Haul ) What about another light to wind down the spare on a Ute ? You can turn your into a Christmas tree, but they may not work when you need them. Keep it simple. An engine bay light is OK, but because it can get quite wet, positioning / type of switch is important.

Only vehicle ive seen with an under bonnet light is an F250.

God invented iphones with flash lights in them for a reason.

Lada Niva had them. On a lead that plugged into a socket under the bonnet and came with the tool kit (also stored in the well of spare wheel under the bonnet). Mind you they were needed so you could check what the most recent thing to fall off was.



My brother in law had one and I think the tool kit above was its most impressive feature :-) Oh and its go anywhere, albeit leaving a trail of parts behind it, off-road ability.


As you can see its lead was stored inside the cap of the light (this is a different Lada model though) :

I think one of these kept in the glove box would solve all your problems, it would even throw enough light to drive by in an emergency. I'm off to ebay to order one for myself.
If that's too expensive you can buy a $10 cheapy, still good enough for changing a tyre on the darkest of nights.
