Subaru are great cars. However a minuscule dealer network , and I am assuming limited or pricey spares could be a potential issue. At least with a Toyota or a Hyundai the support and backup of a huge dealer network would mean minimal downtime in a prang or breakdown.

It depends on what you are looking for with regards to spares. My mum brought a brand new Hyundai IX35 Highlander from the dealership a year 2 back and yes the warranty is great and all for covering stuff, but she has had to go back numerous times for weird stuff like windscreen wiper motor failing, roof rail cover not fitted properly and other bizarre items. My Subaru while yes the purchase price is more, I have rarely had to go back to the dealer for anything other than servicing. Anything major gets done by my mechanic and sure the part that may need replacing is perhaps a bit more expensive compared to a Korean part, the lack of needing to go back for other stupid things makes up for it.

Horses for courses. Most of the time I have been able to source Subaru stuff online for equivalent prices to Korean parts anyway.

What do people think of recent Renaults?

They're made in Turkey (I like their figs) so I have no idea on build quality, or parts availability.
Pricing isn't bad, they have a 5 year warranty, and they certainly look a lot better and are better equipped than Kias.
Recently looked at a Renault Fluence. About the same size as a Cerata/ Elantra.
Doesn't handle as well as the Megane, but is still a very nice sedan.

So many cars to choose from in this Bracket.
I think you would be mad to write off the Korean cars, they are selling well these days for a reason. and IMO are the better looking
Sadly the only one I wouldn't recommend is the Focus.

Why is that? The new Focus is supposed to be really good.

I meant to update this earlier.
After looking at a lot of 2nd hand cars, we ended up focussing on the New 2016 CF Lancer.
The entry level "ES Sport" has much more feature than other entry levels: Reversing Camera, LED driving lights, Alloys, Climate Control, Digital Radio, Voice Recognition, and Driver's Knee Airbag.
The Next cheapest was the Cerrato at $19,990. We got the Lancer, with 12 months rego, mats, tint, and a tank of fuel for a $19k. Left enough money in the kitty for 12 months insurance. Daughter is stoked.
Would have preferred a late-model 2nd hand, or even a demo, but they just weren't competitive on price.

The Lancers are a CVT. Not my cup of tea, but daughter like it.
5 year warranty and capped price servicing.

You certainly could have done worse IMO. I personally like the Mitsu Lancers. My sister has an 07 and its still going strong. Sure CVT isnt everyones cup of tea, but what car ticks all the boxes and still falls within that price range? I think you chose well. Keep up with the service intervals/maintenance and she'll have a car that should give her years of trouble free driving.

Daughter was surprised I didn't push Ford... I reckon the NEW Focus (without power-shaft) and with the Ecoboost engine as standard, would be a great little car, but just too far out of price range. It's right up there in Mazda 3 territory.

I looked into those Mazda 3's myself for the mrs but for the price it was too small and didn't meet the criteria we needed. Ended up getting a low km MY12 Forester for her instead. It's about what best fits the criteria with some personal compromise. No regrets.

The Fords are still a worth look, but you gotta weigh up all the options out there in the end.

I reckon you made a good decision.

Yeah 7yrs is good, although 5yrs is also decent.

When daughter was first driving, she had a nasty accident. She got caught out in one of those freak downpours we sometimes get, and some idiot, in a silver car, without their lights on, decided to just stop in the middle of the road until the rain had past. Hence she hates silver cars, and is enamoured with those LED driving lights.

Even disregarding those, the Lancer is just so much better featured, and ultimately around $1,000 less. We had to go next model up to get similar features in a Cerrato, which meant looking 2nd hand, so you've lost a couple of years of the warranty anyway.
