I am looking at an MC Mondeo Zetec Ecoboost or FG Econlpi Falcon . I was looking closer towards the Falcon but the Mondeos seem to be great value. The transmission problems do scare me though. I usually do most of my own servicing but it looks like the transmission is a problem? I can get a Zetec Mc Ecoboost, full logbooks 1 owner 80k for a cheap price so I am seriously after some more information. Can you hook a transmission cooler to the transmission or has anyone changed the oil at regular say 30k instead of 60k intervals?

Another forum had others changing fluid at half the service interval and filter, I'm not sure on the cooler sorry, I thought they'd have one standard. Fuchus seems to be the go to fluid.
I was wary with the dct trans also so I went MB with a traditional slush box two years ago, and like you I flushed three times when I bought it to rid most of it as you can and have done a single flush every second engine service 15K kms. Was it needed....probably not but for $170 for 20L it's not hurting the wallet. In the end a part of me does think I was overly cautious and could have gone an MC. Still an upgrade in vehicle gives a smile every time I walk to get in it. |

Transmission fluid change is quite easy except for a couple of things:
1)Having to remove and instal the air intake box to gain access to the filler plug is a pain - and it it should be done twice, ie off,on,off,on. My current thinking is to make a filling tube fitted at one end with an elbow so you can go under the air box. 2) The vehicle must be level. Working with jacks on the ground is hard, since the unibody construction does not allow for safe support at points other than the sills. My solution to that is currently to use two trolley jacks at the front with a custom safety strut going from the axle to the head of the jack. At the rear I use a single jack under a steel beam from sill to sill. Another possibility is to go up and down on the LHS with one jack as required, down being level. Maybe not as accurate though. 3) The gbox must be 35-45 degrees C. Details are here under DIY transmission fluid change. The cost of fluid and filter makes it uneconomical to do more than 60000km. Cooling is not an issue, there is a cooler. Don't know what the price is now but fluid was $60/l at Ford some time ago. I use FUCHS! ($340/20l) at Bursons. You need 6l. I've taken to use the SubFrame, spread the load across with a small wooden block/plank (something more than the jacks pad) and it lifts without any flexing what so ever both front or rear. But yes each to their own...

Bottom line is you've got to lift it level. So 3 floor jacks minimum, according to Cobrin and Haynes, plus safety stands. Or some other combo, as you will, just remember the safety stands. Getting under and draining the fluid is simple. Rememembering how much you put in? And how much came out?

So not all MC's are equal.
I thought MC's started in late 2010. What we need is a chart showing all the models and dates. I have two MC's and there are some minor differences under the bonnet. Last edited by rondeo; 28-06-2016 at 06:54 PM. Reason: addition |

more mid 2010, I wanted one of those MC's but none were around when I was looking or priced ridiculously. Titaniums more so as expected. I feel Ford wanted to use up a fair amount of slush boxes before they wanted in on the DCT trend. I they were gagging for DCT's and the rush bit them in the bum and Getrag.

My big concern is still this gearbox. The case against Ford for the Aussie class action is for the powershift gearbox albeit on a Festiva. Has anyone completed big kms with a 2012 powershift gearbox?

2010 MC diesel powershift just ticked over 150k km
Plenty for sale at auctions 220+Km. biggest issue for me is the Ford price for oil change every 60k. Takes the shine of the fuel economy. We all need something to worry about though - If I had bought the falcon ecoboost, I'd be reading these forums worried about milkshaking...... Mondeo powershifts were different to the ones in the class action |

The Focus and Fiesta Powershifts are a dry clutch unit. The one in the Mondeo is a wet clutch unit.

The OP not only knows they are different, but now also how they are different. $600 milkshake fix v powershift fix costs could buy a lot of the bang bang juice? I'm very happy how the mondeo drives. Have not drive a 4cyl falcon. |

The other car I am looking at is an EconLpi FG Falcon not the Ecoboost 4 Cylinder Falcon.
