Hey folks ,,,
Have I got a good one for all ,, 2005 ls petrol 5 speed . Miss arrived this arvo ,complaining that our loved focus was stalling , had a wiring noise , battery light illuminated, message on green led saying power steel failure .. Great . Lift bonnet and checked the battery connections , then fired up ..no warning lights , still a wirry ," is that a word ,?" Noise from round the p/s top pump . Turn the wheel slightly and bang , idle drops and recovers , battery light illuminated ,,slight sort of hesitation on the throttle when revved noted .. OK ...bung a simple multimeter on the battery when motor turned off ,,,,12.88 volt Turn motor on ,,,volts drop to 11.33 ,,! Wtf ,,should be above that to charge battery ,,! OK .... Plug my OB2 scan tool in ... No codes or faults ,,! OK .. Pull the right headlight out to check the brake reservoir fluid level ,,,stupid spot ,and a pain in the **** to read levels ,,,,,,checked out fine . Noted a small smell out of the ordinary ..hmmmm ,,sort of electrical burn smell ..?!?. OK ,,, Bunged the battery on charge for a few hours and recheched with multimeter ,,,13.7 while on the carger,,,,12.88 when charger disconnected ,, Why , would all symptoms " lights ,warning on led , stalling , wirry noise , non charging , etc ,etc ,,,be all connected ,,!?!?!? Any help /answers gladly received Last edited by tasdex; 25-06-2016 at 01:08 AM. |

Is there a "how to change " said alternator thread on the forum ,?
Every YouTube shows rear mounted alternator ,,,not the front mounted type |

To be precise, it's a generator not an alternator.
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable 2. Remove the left-hand side headlamp 3. Remove the accessory drive belt 4. Remove the generator upper retaining bolt 5. Detach the air conditioning pipe and position it to one side (if equipped) 6. Remove the components in the order indicated in the following illustration(s) and table(s): 1 - Battery to Generator cable electrical connector 2 - Generator electrical connector 3 - Generator Lower retaining bolts 4 - Generator Installation starts with the top Generator mounting bolt but is basically a reversal of the removal. Bolts are to be tightened in the order shown below: Final tightening of the mounting bolts is to 45 Nm (33 ft/lb) Cheers Russ

Cheers ..
But what is or where is the belt tensioner ,, Other style has the " swing away " tensioner with the 15 mm bolt ,,,what or where is the duratec one ,? And where you say " disconnect the air con ,," Does that mean a regas is in order ,,? ,,or just to " shift " the hose enough for clearance ,,? Last edited by tasdex; 26-06-2016 at 01:02 PM. |

Hmm, I don't have any issues but I have smelt the electrical burn smell once or twice before. Is it an issue?

Quote:
Removal: 1. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) compressor belt 2. Remove the engine upper cover 3. Remove the accessory drive belt - a. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counter-clockwise. b. Remove the accessory drive belt Quote:

Well .
up on a month since this fix has happened ... and have had not one dud start up .. No more wind over and no start . Fantastic . Have fallen for the focus all over again . One thing I forgot to mention ...is the earth strap from the battery to the chassis .." on the strut tower " ... Thought it was odd that there was no real metal on metal contact , from the cable to body , due to a heavy coat of paint on the earth bracket ,,,,so I scratched the paint off where the cable end contacted the bracket . Dunno if this has helped ..... But may have helped things for me . |
