MC Mondeo service costs

Still kicking tyres on a couple of Mondeos ( see previous posts ) but also considering a couple of other possibilities like a lancer " sports back" hatch .

Currently very close to pulling the trigger on a 2012 Mondeo LX wagon with 35,000klms

Just wondering what the ownership costs are like on theses things ?
The costs of A B C services etc ? Are they heavy on tyres ?. It's it safe to use a regular mechanic rather than a Ford dealer service dept ?

Then at least halve that for a service from a decent non Ford dealer mechanic.

About to get mine done and will come back with pricing. (Probably next month)

Given that I have owned these brand new, they are perhaps heavier than the average car on the wallet - they B services are about 700 bucks and the usual 15k service about 300 or so.

In my experience the Continental tyres that they come with don't last very long, mine lasted about 45K despite rotation and alignment and balancing having been carried out. The car runs a negative camber and you can expect to scrub the insides. I found the Kumho tyres to be rather light on the wallet and pretty comfortable, expect to pay about 175 fitted. They lasted about 50K.

As for servicing, the B services are best done at the dealer, while the A or 15k service is better done at your mechanics. The B service for the diesels also involves change of the DCT fluid - best left to the guys with the diagnostic tools and equipment.

Am currently on my second Mondeo - MD Trend Diesel, just two months in and I have a keen sense of appreciation for the MC Mondeo, in many ways it is better or rather more user friendly.

Could you please expand on this?

I usually replace my work car after 3 years, but couldn't find anything new in the price range that I preferred. I looked again when it was 4 years old and nearly bought a Passat. But the Mondeo just felt nicer to drive so I didn't go ahead thank goodness!

They really are a good all-round car.

The service was done this morning and the only fault found was a small oil (Engine) leak from the engine near the transmission.

The injectors were clean and showed no leakage, brake fluid was checked for water and no problems. Finally he plugged in the computer and all checked out okay.

Service $130
2x5 Ltrs oil + Oil Filter $100
Total all up $230



I can highly recommend this guy and he is in Noble Park, Vic or he will come to you. Second time I have used him. First time on my Focus in a local carpark (Saved towing fees) when circlip came off front left driveshaft making car undrivable.

Let me know and I will post his details if interested. He specialises in European cars and diesels. If you speak Polish ask for a discount. I don't but he looked after me. Less than half of Ford's cost.

just my $0.02 on Ford fixed service costs..
My MB Mondeo A service is around $325.00.
An independent has quoted me around $200, but the ford price included 12 months RACV membership which is $100, so works out about line ball.

What oil did he use? And did he replace the cabin filter? You can't say it's half the price when it's not a like for like service. Then there's the 12 months roadside assistance.

I know from my MC EcoBoost that the service costs aren't that different. My independent guy does the mid term (7500km) service each 6 months as I only do short trips with the dealer doing the main one at 15k. My mate charges me $200 which includes 5.4l of Magnatec Professional (about $20 per litre) and the dealer cost is around $320 with the cabin filter and the roadside assistance thrown in. Not much difference really.

I don't know why people keep mentioning the cabin filter like it's expensive, it's only $21. My local Ford sells them to me for $20, as I hand over $20 and scrounge for that $1 coin twice they've gone "Ah make it $20, don't worry about the $1" as I've gone to open the coin pocket. OE Motorcraft Charcoal type filter.

The cabin filter change is awkward and time consuming. I'd say the fastest it could be done might be 20 minutes, likely a 30 minute job. Took me an hour the first time. On that basis the labour cost is higher than the filter.

Some mechanics may even overlook the change for that reason. The filter on my second-hand Mondy was chock full when I changed it, even though the last logbook service was not long before. Looks simple on paper though:

REMOVE AND INSTALL

Remove glovebox: 4 torx screws and 2 10mm hex head.
Remove 4 electrical connectors from glovebox (USB
socket complete with bracket).


Seriously bad design in other words.

Remove trim panel below glovebox.
Release the catch and lower the electronics module(GEM).
Lift the module out of the rear pivots
and manoeuvre it out of the way.

Remove the 3 cabin filter cover screws
using right angle drive adapter.
Pull the old filter out.

The new filter goes in with the airflow arrow
pointing into the cabin.
Bending the filter is necessary to get it in.

I can say and did say half the price if as how I wanted to emphasise there are better value deals around than a Ford Dealer offers. Yes I know the Ford price and if only 5.5 Ltrs of oil was used/charged for then it was close to half their price.

Oh! Shock oh horror he didn't replace the cabin filter.

As far as the 12 month roadside assist well that would be nice but do they offer that on a 6 year old vehicle out of warranty? Besides if I wanted that I would join the RACV.

Anyway I am happy with the job and would recommend him to others in SE Melbourne.

I understand that if I were to take my car to them in October I would qualify for the complimentary roadside assistance, but that will be the last year for this car. Somewhat gallingly, I'd already paid up for five years' NRMA membership with my previous car. I'd have to cancel to take advantage of the complimentary membership, NRMA will refund the unused years but won't refund a part year. It should still be a net gain but worth the hassle?

Think I would miss out with 224,000km on the clock already.
